Another busy week in Bordeaux with some major releases stirring huge interest from around the world. Chateau Pavie Macquin was one of the top picks in Saint-Emilion in terms of quality and price and the wine unsurprisingly sold out very quickly. Le Dome was another Saint-Emilion hit in 2018 and again its fair pricing combined with huge critic approval saw record sales for this wine. On the Left Bank, two wines that instantly sold out were two of the most popular and most improved Chateaux in the whole of Bordeaux – Chateau Calon Segur and Chateau Carmes de Haut-Brion. We did our best to allocate as fairly as possible, but these were two wines in which demand very much outstripped supply.
Chateau Pape Clement was another big release this week and in 2018 the estate produced a wine that beautifully combines the identity of the vintage and the new level of precision and restraint in Bordeaux when it comes to extraction. The Pape Clement 2018 Rouge is easily the best wine they have produced in recent vintages.
Chateau Beychevelle from Saint-Julien was also a big hit. In contrast, Chateau Malescot St Exupery in Margaux did not see the uptake we would expect, considering the quality coming out of Margaux in 2018, combined with the highest scores the Chateau has received. For those that may have missed it in all the flurry of releases, this could be a smart buy with some cases still available.
