2018 Bordeaux En Primeur 2018: Critics' Scores Round-Up

The reviews are in. The overall top scorers for the 2018 vintage are Chateau Ausone and Petrus, both sharing an aggregate score of 99.5, with Chateau Lafleur just behind with 99.3. These aggregate scores are compiled from the top Bordeaux expert critics: James Suckling, Lisa Perrotti-Brown (Wine Advocate), Jeb Dunnuck, Jane Anson (Decanter) and Antonio Galloni (Vinous).

Out of the First Growths on the Left Bank, Chateau Latour came out on top with 99.25 points. The Second Growth Chateau Leoville Las Cases certainly outperformed in 2018 and sits on a par with Chateau Margaux at 99 points. Chateau Lafite and Chateau Mouton Rothschild feature just below them with 98.75 points. Chateau Haut Brion was the lowest scorer of the First Growths this year - coming in a 98 points - but there really is just a hair's breadth between them. Looking across the huge number of wines with incredibly high aggregate scores, the quality of the 2018 vintage shines through.

Looking at where the smart money buy might be, Chateau Rauzan Segla looks like the obvious choice, with an incredible aggregate score of 99 points and an expected release price of just £55 - £70 a bottle. Chateau Haut Bailly and Chateau Calon Segur are 2 other top performing mid-price wines that look like smart buys if you can secure yourself an allocation. It was not at all surprising to see Chateau Calon Segur sell out immediately on release, two weeks ago. We await the release of Chateau Haut Bailly in the next few weeks. Domaine de Chevalier, sitting around an expected release price of £50 a bottle, also looks like a no-brainer considering its exceptional aggregate score of 97.25 in 2018. Chateau Lynch Bages (97.25), Leoville Barton (96) are also top scoring mid-price point wines not to be missed.

At the premium price point from the Right Bank, a couple of wines that will be in short supply and worth securing as soon as they are released are Chateau Figeac and Vieux Chateau Certan. Both of these wines are exceptional and without doubt some of the best wines of the vintage.
