Available Now: Maison Leroy Collection
The Maison Leroy Collection wines are effectively Madame Leroy's negociant arm. Each year her three courtiers present her with a selection of unlabelled wines and she tastes them with no knowledge of price or provenance. Staking her considerable reputation on her expert palate and market knowledge, she selects the Maison’s outturn from what she has tasted. Completing the elevage herself, she makes the selected wines sing.
We visited Auxey-Duresses in February to taste this year's releases with Leroy's Gilles Desprez. As expected, the collection was incredible, and it was met with fervent interest when we offered the wines to our clients a few weeks later.
We currently have Maison Leroy's 2014 Bourgogne Rouge available. The 2014 vintage is a real classic vintage for red Burgundy offering great freshness as well as concentration. The pinot noir has a dark, bright core. Very pure, inviting, attractive, perfumed nose. Fleshy dark cherry, redcurrants and fresh raspberry. The wine is nicely weighted and shows excellent balance throughout, with core of sweet red fruit supported by bright, refreshing acidity. Not overripe, more classic in feel than the 2015, for example. This is a very pretty, delicious and beautifully defined Bourgogne Rouge release from Leroy, given its fleshy fruit character and composition and balancing acidity, mean it can be enjoyed early, or will definitely reward 5-10 years cellaring.
We also have a small amount of the amazing 2015 Bourgogne Blanc from Maison Leroy. Pale lemon in colour. Very aromatic at this young stage, white peach, honeysuckle and blossom leaping from the glass with a touch of ripe yellow pear. Nicely weighted and very fresh in the mouth. Shows the open and inviting nature of whites in the 2015 vintage but still very young and possessing of more than enough acid, fruit and texture to suggest that it will fill out and keep improving in bottle.
