The 1985 d'Yquem is a powerful, rich, exceptionally concentrated wine. Yet because of the lack of botrytis in the vineyards during this hot, dry vintage, the wine does not have the compelling complexity so frequently encountered in d'Yquem. Nevertheless, this massive, unctuous, light-golden-colored d'Yquem makes quite a mouthful of wine with its honeyed flavors. It is hard to know when a wine such as this will be fully mature, but I have no hesitation in saying that the wine will certainly last for 25-30 or more years, though I do not see it ever being among the great d'Yquems. Anticipated maturity: 1995-2025. Last tasted, 3/92.| Wine Advocate.August, 1993

A charming Yquem that's round, thick, dense and very honeyed. But it doesn't taste of botrytized, dried fruit flavors (the château tried to wait for noble rot and harvested late, into December). While creamy and opulent, it's also refined.--Yquem vertical. Best after 2015. Winespectator.com

Château d’Yquem is arguably the finest sweet wine in the World, and the leading estate in Sauternes. In a league of its own, the only wine that Yquem can be fairly judged against is a different vintage of Yquem.

The château and its vineyards lie on the highest point of Sauternes, and is planted to Semillon (80%) and Sauvignon Blanc. Semillon gives the wine its weight and oleaginous texture, the Sauvignon Blanc. The grapes are harvested by hand, bunch by bunch, with as many as six or seven passes through the vineyard to select grapes that are fully botrytised and concentrated. One vine will, on average, yield one glass of the final product.

Yquem is owned by LVMH, owners of Dom Pérignon and Krug, and is run by Pierre Lurton, who also runs St Emilion’s Cheval Blanc. A dry white wine, Ygrec, is also made.
