The 1976 Yquem continues to go from strength to strength. Who can ignore the awesome bouquet of spices, honeyed fruit, pineapples, bananas, coconuts, and overripe melons? This full-bodied, viscous, luscious wine has been absolutely delicious since bottling, given its relatively low acidity and precocious personality. It is one of the few true great vintages of Yquem that can actually be drunk with tremendous pleasure at such a young age. Eighty percent of the harvest made it into the final wine. Anticipated maturity: Now-2025. Last tasted, 12/90. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate January 1998

Deep amber hue. A youthful nose of orange-peel, honey, wax and apricot. It does not explode and charm like the '75, this is much more reserved. The palate is very powerful and focused with mineral, quince and wild honey. Very elegant with a soft texture, but not the hedonism or the ebullience of the '75. Certainly a lovely Yquem, but the 75 has more joie-de-vivre. Drink now until 2025. Tasted November 2004. Neal Martin, eRobertParker.com

This is silky and beautifully creamy in the mouth. Medium-bodied, there's nothing heavy or big here, just a sense of harmony. So ethereal, it's the sort of wine one could drink almost every night.--Yquem vertical. Drink now through 2030. Winespectator.com

Dark copper. Hint of molasses on the nose – very luscious - though there is very nice balancing acidity and creamy, slightly burnt texture. Just starting to take on a rather drier aspect than in its youth but still giving lots of pleasure. Jancis Robinson, jancisrobinson.com

Medium gold. rich honeyed botrytis nose, peaches and cream, immensely fruity but elegant too. sweet, intense, very concentrated, spicy, fine acidity, delicious fruit, a touch raisiny but by no means blowsy. very good length. Decanter.com

Château d’Yquem is arguably the finest sweet wine in the World, and the leading estate in Sauternes. In a league of its own, the only wine that Yquem can be fairly judged against is a different vintage of Yquem.

The château and its vineyards lie on the highest point of Sauternes, and is planted to Semillon (80%) and Sauvignon Blanc. Semillon gives the wine its weight and oleaginous texture, the Sauvignon Blanc. The grapes are harvested by hand, bunch by bunch, with as many as six or seven passes through the vineyard to select grapes that are fully botrytised and concentrated. One vine will, on average, yield one glass of the final product.

Yquem is owned by LVMH, owners of Dom Pérignon and Krug, and is run by Pierre Lurton, who also runs St Emilion’s Cheval Blanc. A dry white wine, Ygrec, is also made.
