2014 Vosne Romanee Vieilles Vignes Mischief & Mayhem

Mischief & Mayhem are a safe haven in what can be the minefield of Burgundy. Proprietor Michael Ragg has cultivated some excellent grape sources and, with impeccable attention to detail in the winery, makes the absolute most of these raw materials.

The house style is one of clean, precise and very pure flavours that are designed to perfectly capture the qualities of their respective vineyard, but quantities are tiny, only three barrels of the top whites are made and four barrels of the old vine reds. Even better for the impatient buyer, they also show very well when young and won’t need decades in the cellar to offer enormously rewarding drinking.

These wines are firm buys that have wowed us at recent tastings.

Beautiful lift on the nose with aromas of crushed rose, raspberry and sweet spices. Bright and energetic palate with soft/supple texture and pure red berry fruit. Raspberry, cherry and black currant are perfectly laced with flecks of exotic spice. Gorgeous purity and drinking beautifully already. (March 2016) Drink 2016-2024.

Mischief and Mayhem was established in 2004 by Englishman Michael Ragg and his partner (now wife) Fiona. For ten years they have been producing very fine, fairly-priced Burgundy on a negociant basis, and the company achieved full domaine status in 2012 with the purchase of a small plot – conveniently in front of their property – of Aloxe-Corton, Les Caillettes. In 2013 a plot of Savigny-les-Beaune 1er cru Les Gravieres was added to the portfolio.

The Raggs’ philosophy is refreshingly simple: clean, precise, elegant wines. After more than ten years on the ground in Burgundy, an enviable book of contacts has been built up, and fruit is sourced from the cream of the growers and from the best vineyards. Vinification is now done in-house, and more wine than ever is bought as fruit as opposed to juice. There is no financial advantage to this: it’s all about quality and control.

The style of the whites is clean and pure with a distinctly mineral edge. Ask Ragg for his inspiration and the names of Lafon and Roulot will almost certainly come up. If the wines have a hallmark on top of their precision and minerality it is their sheer drinkability on top of their technical excellence.

The style of the reds again focusses on purity, and the same dedication goes into the sourcing of the fruit. The wines are about terroir, an aspect that is particularly clear in the single vineyard bottlings.

M&M also make one of our house favourites: a Bourgogne Blanc that is arguably one of the best buys in Burgundy.
