2011 Vosne Romanee Les Chaumes Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux



From a great producer and one of the most interesting vineyards; the 2011 Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux, Vosne Romanee Les Chaumes is a brilliant under-the-radar 1er Cru Burgundy. Les Chaumes is a superbly sited 1er Cru, it runs up to the mighty La Tache and is next to the highly regarded Aux Malconsorts. Prices for both of these run from high to truly astronomical and make the Chaumes look particularly strong in terms of value.

 

It’s a large vineyard in Burgundian terms and so it pays to know your producer. We think this is a stand-out: Arnoux-Lachaux (formerly Robert Arnoux) is capable of producing very, very good wines. Robert Parker describes them, at their best, as “not unlike downsized versions of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti”. It has exciting barrel scores from both Allen Meadows and Stephen Tanzer, both of whom comment on its potential. If tasted again from bottle, it seems safe to assume that it would be scoring at the top of the range, if not higher. Les Chaumes is one of the great insider 1er Crus of Burgundy.

A highly spiced nose of both red and black pinot fruit is trimmed in hints of earth and sandalwood. The very generous and impressively rich medium weight flavors are blessed with an abundance of dry extract that imparts a beguilingly seductive texture to the lush, balanced and persistent finish. This is first rate as Chaumes rarely possesses this level of potential quality. Tasted: Jan 14, 2013. Drink: 2018+

Good bright, dark red. Raspberry, spices, flowers and licorice on the scented nose. Dense, sweet and creamy, with a dominant flavor of sappy maraschino cherry. Finishes impressively long and palate-saturating, with ripe tannins and good medicinal reserve. Lachaux noted that this cuvee used to be harder, but is very supple in both 2011 and 2010. Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux, created in 1858 and currently run by Florence and Pascal Lachaux, covers 14.5 hectares of land spanning 15 different Burgundy appellations including Grand Cru plots in Clos Vougoet, Romanee-Saint-Vivant and Echezeaux. Grapes go through a 3 to 4 week maceration period including cold soak and once the wines are ready for barrel, the percentage of new oak will vary from 30 to 100%. In the vineyards they believe in the raisonee" approach, trying to limit the chemicals used whilst ensuring the health of the vines.
