Jean Thevenet’s white Burgundies are amongst out best sellers every year and we are proud to import these brilliant and idiosyncratic wines direct from the domaine.

The estate is a deeply traditional one and just one aspect of this is that the wines are never released before they are deemed ready to drink.  The 2009 Viré Clessé has now passed the test and is ready to go.

Previous buyers of Domaine de la Bongran will know that the wines punch way, way, above their weight and will put wines from much grander appellations, and much grander price tags, to shame.  In terms of value these wines are one of the great steals.  Put away your Puligny: this will match it and more.

Praise for the wines is universal.  Robert Parker states “these are the wines of a genius”; Allen Meadows “the quality of what is produced here is mind boggling”.  We simply say: “buy these wines, they are brilliant.”

Jean Thevenet’s Domaine de la Bongran makes some of the most idiosyncratic, rich, energetic and simply brilliant expressions of Chardonnay and we are proud to be their key UK importer. Based in the village of Clessé, the domaine is deeply traditional, making some of the best white wines of the region. Easily a match for the best of Puligny or Chassagne-Montrachet, they are examples of what can be achieved with traditional winemaking methods.

Henri Jayer once said that a winemaker needs a chair. Less intervention, more reflection. In the cellars of Domaine de la Bongran intervention is minimal, with fermentations sometimes taking up to two years. The grapes are harvested late, and the rich, sweet juice is then given all the time it needs. The wines are never released before they are deemed ready to drink, and have the structure and balance to age for decades. These are some of the best white wines to be found, not just in the Maconnais, but in all of Burgundy.

Thevenet has a second Maconnais domaine, Emilian Gillet. These wines are on vines planted on chalkier soil than the Bongran vines, and are more mineral, and crisper as a result.
