The Vin de Constance from Klein Constantia is one of the great sweet wines of the world. Released in April 2016, the brilliant Vin de Constance 2012 is an unmissable buy.
South Africa’s Klein Constantia Estate is one of the fine wine world’s historic estates, with vines first planted there in 1685 and their wines coveted by historical figures such as Napoléon Bonaparte, the Russian Tsars and King Louis XVI, until phylloxera struck the vineyards in the mid 19th century.
After a period of dormancy, the estate was revived in the 1986 vintage and is now back to full and impressive form, to the extent that Neal Martin commented that the 2007 Vin de Constance 'gives Yquem a run for its money' (Oct 2013).
The 2012 keeps up this run of excellence with 94 points from Martin and a big 97 points from TIm Atkin who advises 'put a note in your diary to buy some'.

The 2012 Vin de Constance Natural Sweet Wine delivers 160 grams per liter of residual sugar with a pH of 3.7 and, spent 28 months in French and Hungarian oak barrels. There is actually great similarity on the nose, perhaps a little more floral than the 2011 with mirabelle, and a touch of petrol infusing the honey and marmalade aromas. The palate is unctuous on the entry, nicely balanced as the acidity slices through the rich honeyed fruit that lingers long in the mouth, a touch of orange zest and nectarine towards the finish. I have a preference for this Vin de Constance over the 2012 - a superb dessert wine from Matthew Day. (Nov 2015) www.erobertparker.com Drink 2017-2045
