At an incredible price and with a perfect 100 point score, the 2008 Vigna d’Alceo from Castello dei Rampolla is a very exciting wine.

Made in one of the finest spots in the heart of the Chianti Classico region from a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Petit Verdot, this is a Super-Tuscan masterpiece combining the quality of the superb terroir with the proven potential of these two international grapes.

Since it was first created in the 1970s, the Vigna d’Alceo has become one of Italy’s most cherished and sought-after wines. With a perfect score and supply already thin, this will be one of the most popular in history and is not to be missed while still available.

The 2008 d’Alceo is a huge, inward, brooding wine. Plums, black cherries, camphor, incense and smoke emerge over time, but only with great reluctance. The 2008 is going to require considerable patience, but it is shaping up to be an absolute jewel. The d’Alceo is a wine of notable depth and purity, but it is very closed down at the moment. Dark red fruit, flowers, mint, spices, tar, cassis, graphite and camphor linger on the huge, structured finish. This is a towering effort from the Di Napoli family. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2033. ||Rampolla is one of the most fascinating wineries in Tuscany, and Italy, for that matter. The relentless pursuit of excellence is evident in these spectacular wines. The 2008s capture Rampolla in a transitional phase that marks the move to cement and amphora, which was completed by 2009. As for the wines, they are spectacular. In 2010, Rampolla introduced a new wine, a 100% Sangiovese fermented and aged in amphora, with no additional SO2, that I was not able to taste for this article. Simply put, these are reference point wines from Luca and Maurizia Di Napoli. Wine Advocate.June, 2012

"Love this. Fabulous aromas of currants and blackberries. Hints of licorice, Indian spices and dried violets. Full-bodied, ultra-fine tannins and amazing fruit, yet so vibrant, racy and balanced. The structure of Margaux with the style of Rampolla. Best ever. Blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. From organically grown grapes. Leave it for at least five or six years."

Castello dei Rampolla is a Tuscan wine producer based in Panzano, in the Chianti Classico region. The winery is considered one of the leaders in the Chianti region and have pioneered organic and biodynamic viticulture, beginning as far back as 1994.

Both indigenous and international grape varieties are grown on the 30 hectare property, from which 3 red wines and 1 white wine are produced. A total production of 80,000 bottles are made of Chianti Classico, d’Alceo, Sammarco and the single white wine, Trebianchi.

In the vineyards, organic principles are practiced religiously and every operation is carried out according to the biodynamic calendar. Under the watchful eye of winemaker Luca di Napoli Rampolla, the wines are fermented in a variety of vessels, including amphora jars before ageing takes place in French oak barriques. Only native yeast is used and minimal sulphur is added, if at all.

The resulting wines are truly genius expressions of the terroir in Chianti Classico and have gained a great reputation amongst wine critics and enthusiasts alike. Renowned Italian wine critic, Antonio Galloni, may have said it best, “Castello dei Rampolla is one of the benchmark properties in Tuscany, and for good reason. At their finest, these are some of the most elegant, luscious wines readers will come across.”
