The 2000 Vigna D’Alceo by Castello di Rampolla is a very exciting wine. A 98 point Tuscan with “great intensity, superb purity”, it is an unmissable wine. When Robert Parker tasted this back in 2002 he was blown away, describing it as a “mythical wine” with an epic minute long finish and predicted that it would age-effortlessly. Over a decade on from that tasting, it looks a very tempting proposition.

 

Such quality is no huge surprise, Castello di Rampolla are one of the great estates of Tuscany and craft this Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot blend from a superb terroir. Trackind down cases from the 2000 vintage is very difficult and the opportunity should not be overlooked.

For whatever reason, the full-bodied 2000 Vigna d'Alceo was roaring the day I tasted it. A single vineyard blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Sangiovese, it tastes like the Sammarco on steroids. It boasts a deep purple color in addition to scents of espresso, sweet melted licorice, black currant jam, and toasty oak. There is great intensity, superb purity, and a finish that lingers for nearly a minute. This mythical wine requires 2-3 years of cellaring, and will age effortlessly for two decades. Castello dei Rampolla is a Tuscan wine producer based in Panzano, in the Chianti Classico region. The winery is considered one of the leaders in the Chianti region and have pioneered organic and biodynamic viticulture, beginning as far back as 1994.

 

Both indigenous and international grape varieties are grown on the 30 hectare property, from which 3 red wines and 1 white wine are produced. A total production of 80,000 bottles are made of Chianti Classico, d’Alceo, Sammarco and the single white wine, Trebianchi.

 

In the vineyards, organic principles are practiced religiously and every operation is carried out according to the biodynamic calendar. Under the watchful eye of winemaker Luca di Napoli Rampolla, the wines are fermented in a variety of vessels, including amphora jars before ageing takes place in French oak barriques. Only native yeast is used and minimal sulphur is added, if at all.

 

The resulting wines are truly genius expressions of the terroir in Chianti Classico and have gained a great reputation amongst wine critics and enthusiasts alike.
