According to Robert Parker: Tenuta di Trinoro produces some of the most exciting wines being made anywhere.” That was certainly true in 2009. With 99 points, Trinoro 2009 is Wine Advocate’s highest-scoring Italian wine of the vintage, outscoring the great names of Masseto, Solaia, Sassicaia, Gaja, Voerzio and Giacomo Conterno by at least two points. The critics’ reviews speak for themselves:

“Seamless” – Jancis Robinson
“Full-throttle personality” – Antonio Galloni
“Stunning wine” – Monica Larner

A truly unique wine, only 700 cases were made of this Bordeaux-inspired red that utilises low yielding vines (cuttings taken from the likes of Vieux Château Certan) planted at unusually high density on poor soils in what Robert Parker calls “the middle of nowhere”.

Winemaker Andrea Franchetti borrows Bordeaux nomenclature to describe his terroir as “Graves” and “Côtes”. Couple that with this wine's huge score in 2009 and its blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, and it is maybe best compared alongside the vastly more expensive Mouton-Rothschild, Château Margaux, Cheval Blanc and Lafleur, which all achieved the same score in Wine Advocate for 2009, or Le Pin, Pétrus, Latour or Haut-Brion that only beat it by a single point.

As this Super-Tuscan masterpiece enters its drinking window, it is sure to offer immense pleasure for anyone lucky enough to find a case…

The estate's 2009 Tenuta di Trinoro presents exotic notes of wild cherries, plums, spices, minerals and licorice all of which come together on a silky, polished frame. Smoke, incense and a host of other seductive, beguiling aromas and flavors add complexity as they wrap around the seriously intense finish. The 2009 Tenuta shows off marvelous intensity and a full-throttle personality while retaining a touch more freshness than is sometimes the case. In 2009 the Tenuta is 42% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Franc, 12%, Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot. Aug 2011, www.vinous.com, Drink:2017-2029

If you ask Andrea Franchetti to name his two favorite vintages of the past, they are 2001 and 2009. The 2009 Tenuta di Trinoro is indeed an outstanding blend of 40% Cabernet Franc, 30% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot. The wine is showing beautifully right now and promises more excellence to carry it forward over the years. At the moment, it is seamless and infinite with a superior sense of balance and dark fruit integrity. It speaks in a loud, clear and articulate voice. The wine's appearance shows a dark, impenetrable color that underlines the ideal growing conditions of the vintage and the slow fruit-ripening. The aromas are stunning and perfectly balanced, showing both elegance and power. The tannins deliver dimension and a firmly unyielding quality that bodes very well for the future evolution of this stunning wine. Dec 2015, www.robertparker.com, Drink: 2015-2030

40% Cabernet Franc, 30% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. Seamless but he says less expressive than the other wines. Not too hot. Very dark crimson. Mellow and beautifully balanced with a hint of cold tea. The tannins are more obvious than in the 2011 and 2012. Big and sweet. Nov 2014, www.jancisrobinson.com, Drink: 2017-2030
