Under the same ownership as one of America’s most famous fine wines, Screaming Eagle, Jonata is a very special winery with a reputation for crafting fantastic wines - so much so that winemaker Matt Dees actually turned down an opportunity to move to Screaming Eagle in order to stay on and make Jonata a key Californian producer. We are very pleased he did so as Jonata’s wines are genuinely sensational and fully reflected the care and skill that went into them.
2013 is an especially exciting vintage, with Parker stating: “To strongly reiterate, 2013 for many wineries in Napa and Sonoma has produced the finest wines I have tasted in 37 years. In fact, all of California has experienced a qualitative bonanza”. Jonata’s wines are produced in small quantities and are normally only available via a tightly controlled mailing list. Lastly, the entry level 2013 Todos Proprietary Red Wine is a smokin’ wine that’s made from 78% Syrah, 15% Sangiovese, 2% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Viognier, 1% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot and 1% Merlot. Full-bodied, supple, elegant and concentrated, with impeccable balance, it offers lots of purple fruit characteristics, spice, dried flowers and underbrush aromas and flavors. It’s one of the more approachable wines in the lineup, yet it will evolve for a decade or more on its purity and balance
Based north of Santa Barbara in the Santa Ynez Valley, Jonata sold its first wine – the 2004 vintage – as recently as 2007. With a particular commitment to red grapes Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Syrah, Jonata’s 586 acres are cultivated wholly organically, with a dedication to sustainability and ethical farming that pervades across the range.

Winemaker is the exceptionally talented Matt Dees, who turned down a winemaking job at Screaming Eagle to remain at Jonata. The wines created at this extraordinary estate are seldom easygoing, but hugely concentrated and complex, with unorthodox varietal blending, ripe fruits and expensive oak in evidence as standard.
Range highlights include the eye-wateringly rare Todos, a Syrah-dominated blend made in annual batches of little more than 2,000 cases and described by the Wine Advocate’s Jeb Dunnuck as thrillingly concentrated. Elsewhere, the Bordeaux blend El Alma (“The Soul”) has scored highs of 97 points in the Wine Advocate, whilst Chapoutier Ermitage lookalike La Sangre (“The Blood”) has scored a near-perfect 98-100 points with Robert Parker.
Normally only available via a tightly controlled mailing list, Jonata wines are rarities and ones to seek out wherever possible, though demand perpetually outstrips supply.
