Top Priorat tends to be made in tiny quantities and bought-up on release, and as such finding significant back-vintage parcels makes us quite excited, especially when the wine in question has spent its life unmoved in the winery’s cellars. A hugely-scored wine, now right in its prime drinking window and shipping direct from the producer, the 96-98 point 2001 ‘Tirant’ from Rotllan Torra ticks all the boxes.

This is textbook Priorat made from very old vines, which means low yields and superb quality fruit. It’s big, rich, powerful and armed with an immense finish that underlines the superb quality on show. With a huge 96-98 points, it also has the potential to rival the two estates that put Priorat on the fine wine map; Clos Erasmus and Clos Mogador.

Both of their respective 2001s have now disappeared from the market, but with the 98 point Erasmus selling at four times the price of the Rotllan when last available, this Tirant looks a comparative bargain. Add in 15 years of maturity and it becomes seriously compelling, especially with perfect ex-cellar provenance.

A prodigious effort, the 2001 Tirant is a 9,000-bottle cuvee made from 30% Grenache (90-100 years old), 25% Carignan (90-100 years old), 25% young vine Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Syrah, and 10% Merlot. Fermented in large oak foudres and aged 12 months in new French oak, it will be bottled with neither fining nor filtration. Inky/purple-colored to the rim, it boasts a spectacular bouquet of blueberries, blackberries, and the region’s classic crushed stone minerality. This full-throttle yet remarkably elegant 2001 possesses tremendous intensity and texture as well as layers of flavor, but comes across as not over the top, overripe, or overly heavy. The 60-second finish reveals more noticeable tannin than the other cuvees. Give it 1-2 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 10-15. The 2001 Tirant is indeed a special wine. ||Jordi Rotllan Torra was one of the pioneers of Priorat having founded this small estate in 1984, long before this now fashionable wine region became world renowned. Incredible depth of fruit with blackberry and blueberry character as well as walnut shell and chocolate. Full body, balanced. Very long finish. Best ever? 100% merlot. (March 2016), www.jamessuckling,com

Winemaker and owner Jordi Rottlan Torra is the vanguard of the new wave of wines from Priorat, combining traditional winemaking practices with ancient low yielding vines. His wines are incredibly rare, with each bottle hand numbered.
