Antinori's Tignanello, one of the first proprietary red Tuscan table wines, is gorgeous in 1988. The color is deep ruby/purple and the nose offers up penetrating aromas of sweet red and black fruits and toasty new oak. In the mouth, this medium to full-bodied wine offers wonderfully precise flavors, excellent richness, good acidity, soft tannins, and a spicy, long, rich finish. Drinkable now, this wine should continue to evolve for at least 10-12 years. I would have to rank this vintage of Tignanello alongside the glorious 1985. ||The Antinori name on a bottle of Italian wine is about as close to a guarantee of quality as one is likely to find. Just about everything he does, in all prices ranges, is good. Even his white wines offer more pleasure than the run-of-the-mill, innocuous character most Italian whites seem to share. The Antinori family have been involved in Italian wine production for over six centuries and are one of 11 families included in the Primum Familiae Vini or First Families of Wine. The family’s roots are in Tuscany where they began making wine as far back as 1385 and eventually pioneered wine production in the Chianti Classico region. The revolution of their wines came in 1971 under the direction of Piero Antinori who created the family’s flagship wine: Tignanello. His innovation in creating the recipe of Cabernet blended with Sangiovese and the use of French oak barriques was a milestone for both the family and the history of Tuscan wine. Tignanello was one of the first wines to establish the Super-Tuscan category and began the movement towards innovation in the region. Later, Piero Antinori created other top Super Tuscan wines: Solaia and Guado Al Tasso. Much like Tignanello, Solaia and Guado Al Tasso receive consistent praise from top wine critics like Robert Parker and James Suckling and continue to dominate the category alongside Ornellaia and Sassicaia. Today, the Antinori firm is still run by Piero Antinori with the support of his three daughters, Albiera, Allegra and Alessia. They are currently one of the biggest wine companies in Italy and continue to acquire new estates throughout Italy and into international wine regions, such as California, Washington, Chile and others.
