2010 Terra di Lavoro Galardi



The 2010 Terra di Lavoro from Galardi is a "fabulous" wine from a cult Italian winery. Since ithis wine was first rated by Robert Parker in 1997, there is not a single vintage that has been rated below 93 points - testament to the quality and consistency of the winemaking. It is clear that this is a wine to buy on release due to the global demand, as per the price comparison in the chart below.

 

On its volcanic slopes in Campania,1300 feet above sea level, this little estate focuses all of its efforts into one excellent wine: Terra di Lavoro, a deeply concentrated blend of Aglianico (80%) and Piedirosso (20%). The fruit is harvested according to ripeness rather than strictly by variety, which means that the Aglianico and Piedirosso are sometimes picked and vinified together. This process is under the guidance of Riccardo Cotarella, one of Italy’s most famous winemakers. Yields are low and assiduous attention to detail in the vineyard is followed by textbook modern fermentation and elevage in new French oak.

 

This small winery (only 10 hectares) produces a mere 2,500 cases per year and the resulting wine is very special indeed.

I hope one day to have another chance to taste a vertical of Roccamonfina Terra di Lavoro because I have a strong feeling the 2010 will occupy a place among the very finest vintages produced on this tiny vineyard on the slopes of the Roccamonfina volcano. An exotic melange of tar, smoke, graphite, blackberry jam and savory herbs explode from the glass. The 2010 is intense and full-bodied, yet also incredibly elegant. A big, breathtaking wine, the 2010 continues to build all the way through to a deeply resonant, expressive finish. I would choose to leave this uttterly beguiling Campanian red alone for the better part of a decade, but readers are going to have a very hard time excercising that patience. This is a fabulous effort from proprietors Arturo and Dora Celentano, and their long-time winemaker Riccardo Cotarella. Fattoria Galardi is a southern Italian wine producer based in the north west of Campania. The winery is best known for making one wine: Terra di Lavoro, based on the Aglianico grape variety. Under the guidance of esteemed oenologist Riccardo Cotarella, the family owned estate has become a real sensation in the wine world and Terra di Lavoro has emerged as one of the star wines of southern Italy. Campania’s generous heat and volcanic soils produce the deeply concentrated grapes that become this wine. The blend of 80% Aglianico and 20% Piedrosso are bottled unfined and unfiltered before being aged for 12 months in new French oak. The resulting wine is structured, powerful and complex with massive ageing potential. Terra di Lavoro is also a wine that is consistently precise vintage to vintage, often scoring in the 97+ point range from Antonio Galloni and James Suckling.
