"The NV Extra Brut Cuvée Louis is based on 1999, with reserve wines from 1996 and 1998. Here the style is decidedly on the oxidative side, with plenty of warm, nutty and spice overtones that develop in the glass. Almond, hazelnut, orange jam, cinnamon and white pepper all make an appearance. Rich, broad and creamy on the palate, the Cuvée Louis is an excellent choice for drinking today, as the flavors are already a bit forward. The Cuvée Louis will appeal most to readers who enjoy vinous Champagnes. The 1999 is 50% Pinot Noir and 50% Chardonnay. Disgorged July 2014. Dosage is 1.8 grams/liter." For this NV Cuvee Louis Brut Nature, they harvested 50% Chardonnay plus 50% Pinot Noir from a single lieut-dit (Les Crayons) in a single year (1999) and fermented them in barrels, where the wine aged until May 2000 but without malolactic. After the second fermentation, the Champagne was disgorged not earlier than June 2014, so after 14 years on the lees. The result is a very clear, pure and extremely complex and persistent wine of great clarity, finesse and length. This wine is bone dry, though not austere, but a rich and full-flavored wine with aromas of toast, mocha, chocolate, apples, lemons, butterscotch, hazelnut, almonds, marzipan, spiced cookies, saffron, porcini, girolles, candied fruits, dates, oranges and mint. The pearls are very delicate and the finish is complex yet pure, firmly structured and very long. This is a fascinating Champagne for its own merits and I would have it for Christmas but without food, if not a three star Michelin cook composes the suitable dish. Disgorged December 2015. The current release of the Tarlant family’s Cuvée Louis is from the base year of 2000 (eighty-five percent of the blend), with the balance made up of wines from 1999, 1998, 1997 and 1996. The wine was aged nearly fifteen years sur latte prior to disgorgement and is a fifty-fifty blend of chardonnay and pinot noir from the single vineyard of Les Crayons. The wine is simply stunning on both the nose and palate, with the bouquet offering up a deep and complex constellation of peach, fresh-baked bread, a touch of nuttiness, a complex base of minerality, smoky overtones and just a touch of buttery oak from the four year-old casks in which the vins clairs were raised. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, focused and beautifully complex, with the wide open personality of the 2000 vintage in evidence, but with fine structure, elegant mousse and long, vibrant finish. This is a mature wine that it already drinking at its peak, and yet it is so beautifully balanced that it will have no trouble aging long and gracefully as well. Chapeau! 93+.
