2014 Soffocone di Vincigliata Bibi Graetz

The 2014 Soffocone from Bibi Graetz is absolute gem of a Tuscan red from one of the region’s finest producers. Containing all the declassified fruit from their hyper-expensive flagship wines, it’s an under-the-radar blockbuster and offers phenomenal value for money.

2014 was a tough vintage for Tuscany and this means the savvy buyer should be selective as there will be some great wines if you know where to look. Arguably none will be better than this effort from Bibi Graetz. They specialise in elegant, old-vine Sangivoese that brings to mind the great wines of Burgundy and has made their Colore (£2,389 per 6 in 2011) and Testamatta (£562 per 6 in 2013) two of the most collectable and expensive wines in Tuscany.

In 2014 neither wine was made and both have been declassified into the Soffocone. For the shrewd buyer, the result is a ‘wow’ wine that clearly gives a fantastic insight into the estate without breaking the bank.

A silky and refined red with plum, berry and cherry character. Medium body and a fresh finish. Shows finesse and beauty. Lively acidity. Best ever. All the Testamatta and Colore is declassified into this. Wow. Drink or hold. Jul 2016, www.jamessuckling.com
