2003 Scharzhofberger Trockenbeerenauslese (Auction) Egon Muller

With a perfect score from Jancis Robinson, a world record price at auction and barely four cases worth ever made available, Egon Müller’s Scharzhofberger Trockenbeerenauslese 2003 is a very serious offering and a once in a lifetime opportunity...

In September 2015 this wine sold at the VDP Prädikat wine auction in Trier for €12,000 a bottle (six times the minimum bid), smashing the previous world record for a young German wine of €5,300 a bottle also set by Egon Müller. The auctioneer described it as: “one of the greatest days for the Mosel, Saar and Ruwer in the last 50 years.”

Jancis Robinson called this nectar “exceptional”, awarded it a perfect 20 points, put its rarity in context: “hardly 15 litres of it are coaxed from each 700 kg basket of grapes” and suggested a longevity of another couple of decades.

Alex Hunt MW writing for Jancis Robinson describes Egon Müller as being amongst the “royalty, the dukes, earls and barons of fine wine”. He and his eight hectares of vines in Scharzhofberg are simply legendary.

At time of writing Egon Müller’s Scharzhofberger Trockenbeerenauslese 2003 commands the highest market price for any German wine in our listings, only bettered by wines from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Yquem and Henri Jayer. As only 22 bottles and 36 halves ever sold, this is a truly unique prospect…

Dull dark honeyed copper colour. Quite amazing richness yet with fantastic acidity too. Such tang! Honey and lime juice. Floral notes. Incredibly persistent. So lively yet rich – revitalising. Dec 2005, www.jancisrobinson.com, Drink: 2005-2035
