2014 Savigny Les Beaune La Dominode Jean-Marc Pavelot

Impressively scored by Neal Martin and singled out by our buying team as one of the best value reds of the vintage, it is truly not to be missed. Savingy reds should be on the radar of any Burgundy fan as they can be excellent in quality while still offering exceptional value.

The 1er Cru of Dominodes is the best of the appellation and Pavelot, a phenomenal producer, leading expert Bill Nanson to state of the combination back in 2012: “I cannot recommend it highly enough.” Nanson goes on to say that, “If the price were to double again, it would still be below that of most Vosne premier crus, and the comparison is not a stupid one” (The Finest Wines of Burgundy, 2012). This neatly highlighted just how strong a proposition this wine from Pavelot is. The 2014 is no exception; awarded 91-93 points by Neal Martin who described it as “a class act”, there is little doubt that this is a wine to snap up.

The 2014 Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru les Dominodes has that sense of density and volume on the nose, typical of this great vineyard. Blackberry and briary scents, sous-bois coming through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with thickset tannin, very well judged acidity, lovely structure and symmetry here with a long, mineral-driven finish that is totally satisfying. This is a great Savigny from Pavelot, one that should be afforded long-term ageing (if possible). December 2015. www.robertparker.com Drink 2018-2032.

Layers of pure red fruits, grilling herbs and perfume on the nose. The palate is fresh and exuberant with ripe acidity and powdery tannins fused with crunchy red fruit. Lovely tension and mineralty on the finish. Very pure and elegant. Dec 2015Dec 2015

Domaine Jean-Marc & Hugues Pavelot is a relatively new discovery for F+R and we have been shipping their outstandingly good Savignys for just under two years.

Hugues Pavelot, like many Burgundians, is both quiet and unassuming. The winemaking here is uncomplicated yet precise, and spending half an hour chatting and tasting shows his clear passion and understanding of the soil. Their vineyards spread across the appellation of Savigny, and a tasting here is a lesson in the quality and variety of terroir in Savigny. These wines remain under the radar for the moment and offer exceptional value. There is remarkable complexity and expression of terroir here.
