The lovely 2001 San Leonardo is a wine in its adolescence phase. Its pedigree is cemented, but its future is still open to chance. This was an excellent vintage that saw pre-harvest rains and warm, dry weather once the fruit had reached optimal ripeness. With this vintage, you begin to get some of the younger aromas that distinguish this great red wine from the far north of Italy. Red cherry and blackberry are followed by chocolate, spice and moist leather. The wine is more immediate, modern and "international" with soft tannins and thick extraction. It opens with a bang and follows through to the end of the palate with the same generous intensity. I'd suggest parking this wine in your cellar for up to ten years or more. With a history dating back to the mid-18th century, Tenuta San Leonardo is one of Trentino's most historic estates with a tremendous pedigree. Their Bordeaux-style wines are made with the collaboration of Carlo Ferrini who, along with Ricardo Cottarella, is one of Italy's foremost wine consultants. Owner Carlo Guerrieri Gonzaga was initiated into winemaking by his oenological godfather" Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, the man behind the great Sassicaia, who taught Carlo all of the secrets of his famous Bordeaux blend. Unsurprisingly Jancis Robinson believes that "if I had to think of one possible other Italian wine [San Leonardo] is most like, it would be Sassicaia."Flagship wine San Leonardo is only produced in the best vintages in tiny quantities (just 33-39hl/ha). Made using low yielding 20-50 year old vines planted on steep slopes of the Dolomites' foothills, San Leonardo is an intensely concentrated, deeply aromatic wine with extraordinary finesse and the potential to improve for over 25 years. After a vertical tasting of all vintages from 1982-2006, Jancis Robinson reported a "most remarkable consistency" with all of the wines sharing "the most admirable blend of subtlety, balance, finesse and (positive) restraint." Jancis enthusiastically went on to say "these are wines with the most complex bouquets, showing just the sort of harmony you wish all classed-growth bordeaux had.
