|Critics have talked about Germany 2015 being the “vintage of the century”, and Von Hövel Saar Riesling Kabinett 2015 represents excellent value.
This wine finished second in the Berlin Kabinett Cup. The UK allocation of the winning wine - Max Ferd. Richter's Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett 2015 - sold out through FINE+RARE almost immediately.
According to Berlin Kabinett Cup organiser Martin Zwick: “Von Hövel has been on the up for the last few years.” Mosel expert and Berlin Kabinett Cup judge Lars Carlberg: “couldn’t believe it really placed second” above such heavyweights as Egon Müller, Dr Loosen and Willi Schaefer. And Mosel Fine Wines, an independent review of Mosel Riesling, awarded it 91 points and described it as “elegant and superbly spicy… and a huge success for a mere Estate wine.”
Winemaker Max von Kunow told us that 2015 is “a great vintage for Germany, especially Mosel and especially for Kabinett and Spätlese.” He compares it to 1971 (Wine Advocate’s highest-ever scoring German vintage), saying that it is even “better than 2001.”
After a visit from Max von Kunow to our office, the FINE+RARE team tasted the Von Hövel Saar Riesling Kabinett 2015, which hails from “long-forgotten grand cru sites of the Saar”, and can confirm that the quality is outstanding.
Fans of Mosel Kabinett would also be wise to consider Von Hövel Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett 2015, which also finished high in the BerlinKabinettCup and was awarded 92 points by Mosel Fine Wines.

Pure lime juice and impressive depth on the palate, regulated by a vibrant acidity.
The 2015 Saar Riesling Kabinett was made from parcels in Krettnach and in Oberemmel (Karlsberg). It offers a nose of sponti, slate and herbs. The fruity side only comes through on the palate where the wine is elegant and superbly spicy. The slate-infused finish delivers freshness, balance and finesse. this proves very enjoyable and a huge success for a "mere" Estate wine. Jun 2016, www.moselfinewines.com, Drink: 2020-2030
