2013 Pontet Canet

Average critic rating : 91.0 points

A blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, this biodynamically farmed vineyard (a rarity, but increasing in the Bordeaux viticulture), had tiny yields of 15 hectoliters per hectare. This doesn’t translate into super concentration, but this is certainly an outstanding effort in an extremely difficult vintage. The wine has a dense purple color, and classic creme de cassis, licorice and mocha and espresso roast notes that Pontet-Canet has displayed recently. The wine is medium-bodied, possesses excellent purity, equilibrium and sweet, but noticeable tannin. This is by no means at the level of the great vintages that have been so common of late from this incredible property on the Plateau of Pauillac across from Mouton Rothschild, but it’s certainly one of the vintage’s more noteworthy efforts. Give it 2-3 years of bottle age and drink it over the following 15 or so years. Wine Advocate.August, 2014

Owned by the Tesseron family, Château Pontet-Canet is one of Pauillac’s most important estates and one whose profile has been on a stellar rise over the past two decades. Situated just south of first growth Mouton-Rothschild, it is one of the largest estates in Pauillac at 80 hectares. It is classed as a cinquième grand cru classé, or fifth growth, though punches well above its classification.

The vineyards of Pontet-Canet are planted principally to Cabernet Sauvignon (63%), Merlot (32%) and Cabernet Franc, a fairly typical Bordeaux blend. This is where the typical comparisons end. Pontet-Canet have been farming their vineyards biodynamically for some years now – the château was the first in Bordeaux to start with a few plots in 2004 – and Pontet-Canet was the pioneer of the re-introduction of working the vineyards with horses. The cellars were totally renovated for the 2005 vintage (and there was a significant jump in quality); since then winemaker Jean-Michel Comme has been experimenting with concrete “eggs” for the fermentation of part of the crop.

The wines of Pontet-Canet have improved steadily for twenty years now – 1994 Pontet-Canet is generally considered to be the watershed vintage – and that improvement was turbo-charged from 2005 onwards. 2010 and 2009 Pontet-Canet are both 100 point wines, and Pontet-Canet has regularly out-scored some of the first growths in recent years.
