The 2006 is a wine to stockpile, especially for those in their thirties and forties as it needs another decade to reach maturity, after which it should keep for 30+ years. This vineyard, just south of Mouton Rothschild, has produced an opaque bluish/purple-colored 2006 with an extraordinarily pure nose of graphite, charcoal, sweet creme de cassis, and a hint of scorched earth. Incredible concentration, stunning richness, and a 60-second finish result in a wine that transcends the vintage as well as this estate’s 1855 classification. This enormously endowed, modern day classic is a legend in the making. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2050+.||Enormous credit is due proprietor Alfred Tesseron for turning things around at this estate in 1994, and continuing to produce first-growth level wines. Pontet-Canet is one of the few bio-dynamically farmed vineyards in the Medoc, and Tesseron is such a perfectionist in both the vineyard and wine cellars that his nickname among other bordelais is “Monsieur Bonsai.” Wine Advocate.February, 2009

Blackberry, currant and plum tart aromas lead to a full body, with a solid core of fruit, sweet fruit and silky tannins. Generous and round, with lovely richness for the vintage. Best after 2014. 23,330 cases made. James Suckling, Wine Spectator 2009

Owned by the Tesseron family, Château Pontet-Canet is one of Pauillac’s most important estates and one whose profile has been on a stellar rise over the past two decades. Situated just south of first growth Mouton-Rothschild, it is one of the largest estates in Pauillac at 80 hectares. It is classed as a cinquième grand cru classé, or fifth growth, though punches well above its classification.

The vineyards of Pontet-Canet are planted principally to Cabernet Sauvignon (63%), Merlot (32%) and Cabernet Franc, a fairly typical Bordeaux blend. This is where the typical comparisons end. Pontet-Canet have been farming their vineyards biodynamically for some years now – the château was the first in Bordeaux to start with a few plots in 2004 – and Pontet-Canet was the pioneer of the re-introduction of working the vineyards with horses. The cellars were totally renovated for the 2005 vintage (and there was a significant jump in quality); since then winemaker Jean-Michel Comme has been experimenting with concrete “eggs” for the fermentation of part of the crop.

The wines of Pontet-Canet have improved steadily for twenty years now – 1994 Pontet-Canet is generally considered to be the watershed vintage – and that improvement was turbo-charged from 2005 onwards. 2010 and 2009 Pontet-Canet are both 100 point wines, and Pontet-Canet has regularly out-scored some of the first growths in recent years.
