Produced from 70 year old vines, the medium to dark ruby-colored 2003 Pommard Jarollieres (red) reveals a nose of black fruits, asphalt, and chocolate. Hugely concentrated as well as rich, it is densely packed with massive layers of red and black fruits that are intermingled with tar. Monstrous tannin forms a buttressing backbone to this powerful behemoth. Projected maturity: 2010-2018. I asked Boillot what made this wine different than the other reds and he had a fascinating response. “Of all my Pinot parcels, this is the one that suffered the least throughout the year for two reasons. First of all, the vines are extremely old and their root system is very deep so it can find water to offset the hot and dry conditions. Secondly, my parcel is planted North/South while almost all the others in the Cote are East/West so the burning sun had much less of an effect.” Wine Advocate.April, 2005
