N.V. Pierre Gimonnet Cuis 1er Cru

The Gimonnet family have been growing grapes in Cuis since 1750, but Olivier & Didier Gimonnet have taken the domaine to a new level in the last few years, focussing on their NV Cuis 1er Cru. A great value choice from a Champagne maker whose showstopper is the non-vintage.

“The non-vintage is our main wine – the one we love most”, said Olivier Gimonnet when we spoke to him at the end of the last year. Olivier’s approach has drawn the attention of wine-lovers both at home and abroad, with France’s Michel Bettane praising the domaine for its “ever-fashionable style, based on freshness and aromatic finesse.”

“Gimonnet Champagnes are marked by their tension and pulsating energy” writes Antonio Galloni, adding that “readers will find terrific interpretations of Côtes des Blancs” where the Gimonnet vineyards all lie. This means that the emphasis here is on Chardonnay, which perfectly suits the pure, feathery-light house style of this small marque.

The Wine Advocate’s Stephen Reinhardt calls Gimonnet “One of my favourite producers of the Cote des Blancs”, and it’s easy to see why. The combination of low dosage and mature reserve wines results in a perfumed, light, floral but complex style of champagne.

A light but very clean nose with good minerality and definition with touches of limestone and cold granite. Very good poise on the palate, subtle touches of white peach and orange-blossom but with that minerality always in the driving seat. Superb nervosite towards the finish, this is suffused with breeding and sophistication. Superb! Oct 2008, www.robertparker.com

Aromatic, with apple blossom and ripe fruit notes, this well-cut blanc de blancs shows a chalky underpinning, layered with flavors of glazed nectarine, toasted almond and candied ginger. Long and creamy on the finish. Oct 2016, www.winespectator.com

Delicate texture but some autolysis on the nose. Real savour and refreshment. Beginning, middle and end to this proper wine – very much more interesting than many champagnes at the same price. Sep 2013, www.jancisrobinson.com

Pale green. High-pitched citrus fruit and floral scents, along with intense mineral and spice nuances. Dry and seamless on the palate, offering juicy lemon, tarragon and ginger flavors and a deeper suggestion of buttered toast. Finishes on a zesty minerally note, with lingering spiciness and strong persistence. Jan 2015, www.vinous.com

Gentle leesy citrus aroma just very slightly autolytic (bready). Complex and creamy in the mouth, super-fresh but with a roundness and generosity to the mouthfeel to offset the dry freshness. Some sour-apple crispness on the finish as it spreads across the palate, complex, dry-tasting and sustained. GV. Oct 2016, www.jancisrobinson.com
