The 2014 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a huge wine. Rich, powerful and dense, yet remarkably precise, the 2014 boasts extraordinary density and fabulous balance. Scents of black fruits, graphite, smoke, tobacco, grilled herbs and incense meld into a huge core of fruit. Hints of black cherry jam, wild flowers and mint add an attractive aromatic top register on the close. Explosive and virile in style, the 2014 appears to have the pedigree to age well for several decades. It is without question one of the wines of the year. The blend is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot.

"The Château Pichon-Lalande 2014 is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot picked over five weeks between 16 September and 20 October. It has a very pure and precise bouquet with a light marine influencing the black cherries and blueberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a tense, graphite-tinged opening, a fine line of acidity (pH 3.72) and a silky smooth finish. The Cabernet Sauvignon is very expressive and dominates the Merlot at the moment, although the Merlot is essentially counterbalancing what might have been a much more austere Pichon-Lalande. Under Nicolas Glumineau, this Pauillac estate is really beginning to "motor" and this is an excellent wine, one within touching distance of the First Growths."

What a joy to feel the ultra-fine tannins in this wine! It really is like touching fine silk. It’s full-bodied with integrated drip fruit of tar, blackberries, minerals as well as a compacted and very long finish. Polished texture. Strong elegance. James Suckling. April, 2015.

Vibrant, with a blaze of iron running from start to finish, while dark currant, cherry and plum fruit forms the core. The long, grippy, integrated finish shows excellent vivacity.—J.M. Wine Spectator, April 2015.

This is not quite as open as the Reserve de la Comtesse. There is some clear class hiding here though. Something defined, and something Pauillac. Defined, precise, svelte and taut. In the mouth this is, quite simply, Pauillac. Aristocratic, and a real sense of character. Fresh, balanced. This tastes of the terroir, not the sunshine: a good thing. Regal. A Queen. Very stylish, and very, very good. Joss Fowler, FINE+RARE, April 2015.

Château Pichon-Lalande is one of the greatest wines of Bordeaux, one of the leading estates in Pauillac, and one of the original “super-seconds” along with Châteaux Léoville-Lascases and Ducru-Beaucaillou . Classified as a deuxième grand cru classé in 1855, top vintages of Pichon-Lalande can often match, occasionally overtake, the first growths in terms of quality.

Situated in the south of Pauillac, neighbouring Château Latour and opposite Château Pichon-Baron , the vineyards of Pichon-Lalande are planted to 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 8% Petit Verdot. The blend of the grand vin leans more to Cabernet Sauvignon: much of the Merlot makes it into their second wine, Reserve de la Comtesse. The vineyards total 89 hectares, the majority of which is to be found on the border of St Julien south of Pichon-Baron.

Pichon-Lalande is inevitably compared with neighbouring Pichon-Baron. Stylistically, Pichon-Lalande is the more feminine, more elegant wine whilst Pichon-Baron more powerful, more foursquare. Under the direction of Nicolas Glumineau since 2012, quality at Pichon-Lalande is clearly on the up, and comparisons with neighbouring Château Latour may well be more frequent. Great vintages such as 1982 and 1996 have shown just how great this Bordeaux château can be.
