2012 Phelan Segur

Tasted blind against some of the best Bordeaux on the market, the 2012 Phelan Segur may just have been the single most compelling buy to emerge from the Jan 2016 Southwold tasting. Scored by Jancis Robinson above even some of the celebrated first-growths, it's a very strong buy.

A glamourous and dense St-Estephe with a “beautiful texture”, not only did the 17.5 point Phelan Segur beat the likes of Chateau Lafite (17 points) and Latour (16.5+) it also bested the most prestigious in its own appellation. It is also excellent value for money, with the lower-scoring 2012s from neighbours Cos d'Estournel and Montrose selling for far higher prices.

So good that it beats some of the best that Bordeaux has to offer, this is an outright bargain and a very shrewd addition to the cellar.

Tasted blind. Lots of glamour and density on the nose with real St-Estèphe integrity too. Round and chock full of St-Estèphe stoniness. Beautiful texture. Should last very well for a 2012 but not as well as other vintages. The most concentrated wine of the Southwold tasting so far. (Jan 2016) www.jancisrobinson.com Drink 2020-2040
