2005 Pape Clement

The 2005 Pape Clement is a stand-out pick of a monumental vintage and has been the focus of intense interest in the fine wine market. A superb year, to many still one of the greatest since 1982, the wines are brilliant expressions of claret showing impeccable balance and purity. Pape Clement in Pessac Leognan had a superb decade at the start of this century, racking up a series of high scores that culminated in a perfect 100 points in 2010 from the Wine Advocate. With 98 points, the 2005 is a close second and is so good that its score even matches the famous Pessac first growth of Haut Brion. With the extra five years of maturity against the 2010, the 2005 will appeal to the drinker that bit sooner as it approaches the lower ranges of its drinking window. Combine this with a renewed focus on the 2005 vintage and the opportunities to place wines like the Pape Clement in the cellar may well start to dwindle.

Owned by Bernard Magrez, this great terroir a few miles from Haut Brion and La Mission Haut Brion has produced one of the superstars of the vintage. A blend of 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, Pape Clement’s 2005 has an opaque purple color and smoky barbecue and chocolaty notes intermixed with cassis and blackberries. There is also some underlying minerality in this full-bodied, super-concentrated wine, which has wonderfully sweet, well-integrated tannins. This majestic, multidimensional wines is one of the great, great wines of the vintage. It should drink well for at least another 25 years.| eRobertParker.com.June, 2015

Dark in color, offering wonderful aromas of licorice, berry, fresh tobacco and currant, with Indian spices. Complex and full-bodied, with supersilky tannins that caress every inch of the palate. Long and satisfying. A joy to taste this young wine. Best after 2015. 7,500 cases made. James Suckling, Wine Spectator 2008

Château Pape Clement is a grand cru classé de Graves owned and run by Bernard Magrez, owner of Ch. La Tour Carnet in the Haut Médoc, Ch. Fombrauge in St Emilion and premier grand cru classé Clos Haut Peyraguey in Sauternes. Situated a little further from the city centre than Haut-Brion and La Mission Haut-Brion , it is situated in the suburbs of Bordeaux city.

Both a red and a white wine are made: the red is approximately 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot; the white 45% Sauvignon Blanc, 45% Sémillon, 5% Sauvignon Gris and 5% Muscadelle. Both wines, red and white, have been rated as 100 point wines by Robert Parker: the 2010 Pape Clement Rouge and 2009 Pape Clement. The wine is a controversial one: there are critics of the “modern” style of Pape Clement but there is no denying the quality of the wines produced here since 1998.
