Neither the 1989 or 1990 performed as well as I might have hoped. The 1989 was tight, with a lean, austere personality, as well as astringent tannin. It exhibited medium-weight and ripe fruit, but the charm and suppleness this wine displayed the first several years after bottling appears to have gone into hiding, replaced by the wine's structure. This impenetrable 1989 requires 4-5 years of cellaring. Whether the tannin will melt away sufficiently for the wine to exhibit complete harmony is doubtful. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate # 109

Elegant and well made. Color is medium-dark ruby. Aromas of dried cherries and licorice. Full-bodied and well structured, with compacted velvety tannins and a long aftertaste of chocolate and fruit and hints of earth.--1989 Bordeaux horizontal. Best after 2004. James Suckling, Wine Spectator 1999

Château Pape Clement is a grand cru classé de Graves owned and run by Bernard Magrez, owner of Ch. La Tour Carnet in the Haut Médoc, Ch. Fombrauge in St Emilion and premier grand cru classé Clos Haut Peyraguey in Sauternes. Situated a little further from the city centre than Haut-Brion and La Mission Haut-Brion , it is situated in the suburbs of Bordeaux city.

Both a red and a white wine are made: the red is approximately 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot; the white 45% Sauvignon Blanc, 45% Sémillon, 5% Sauvignon Gris and 5% Muscadelle. Both wines, red and white, have been rated as 100 point wines by Robert Parker: the 2010 Pape Clement Rouge and 2009 Pape Clement. The wine is a controversial one: there are critics of the “modern” style of Pape Clement but there is no denying the quality of the wines produced here since 1998.
