Jancis Robinson awarded the "really long and complex" Nyetimber Classic Cuvée Brut NV 17.5 points, her second highest score ever for an English sparkling wine and one that puts it on a level with other great multi-vintage wines such as Krug Grande Cuvée Brut, Billecart-Salmon Reserve Brut, Laurent-Perrier Grand Siècle and Veuve Clicquot Brut. Robinson notes that the new multi-vintage release is “obviously deeper flavoured than the [previous] vintage-dated Classic Cuvées.”
Nyetimber’s goal is simple: “to make the finest English sparkling wine there is.” And that appears to have been realised by Dutch owner Eric Heerema (who obviously has an eye on the future saying: "I don't think in years but in generations.") and winemaking couple Cherie Spriggs (previously at Domaine Drouhin in Oregon and currently nominated for IWC Sparkling Winemaker of the Year 2016) and Brad Greatrix (previously with the late Paul Pontallier at Château Margaux).
The team has made the decision to move the Classic Cuvée Brut, which has been a single vintage wine since 1995, to a multi-vintage blend in pursuit of greater consistency, something much valued and rarely seen in the temperamental English climate.
Made from 100% estate-grown fruit handpicked from south-facing chalky slopes, each parcel has been painstakingly vinified separately, malolactic fermentation softens the high natural acidity and a tiny proportion of the reserve wine is aged in new oak, adding further richness. It is aged on the lees for a minimum of three years, which is the same length of time as for their vintage releases.
With Classic Cuvée Brut having been added to the wine list at The Ritz and its competitive price versus the top Champagnes it ranks alongside, this latest release would make an elegant addition to any collection…

Lovely pale gold and gentle, fine bubbles. Toasty, spicy and complex aromas showing wonderful development after more than three years on lees in our cellar. The palate supports these complex aromas with honey, almond, pastry and baked apple flavours. Very fine and elegant with a great combination of intensity, delicacy and length.Typically around 50-60% Chardonnay, 30-40% Pinot Noir and 10-20% Pinot Meunier.
