This is the first wine to display noticeable reduction and it's enough to suppress the underlying fruit. There is excellent intensity to the mineral-driven and precise middle weight flavors that are presently very tight on the linear, persistent and ultra-saline finish. The 2014 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Aux Cras is aged in the same amount of new oak as the Boudots, though here, we have more red berry fruit bursting through with an interwoven sous-bois character. The palate is very expressive with plenty of mineral notes infusing the red and black fruit, a graphene note evident towards its structured and (for Maxime's 2014s) quite linear finish. (only Cheurlin's second vintage for this wine as he recently regained control of the vines): Very dark red. A note of musky reduction to the scents of explosive fresh red fruits, stony minerality and graphite. Thick and dense but with a stony lightness of touch. Tactile, utterly silky wine with terrific inner-mouth mineral energy giving it a light touch. Finishes long, smoky and refined, with a serious tannic spine. From friable calcaire in a warm site, according to Cheurlin. A very suave example of Nuits-Saint-Georges. Jan 2016, www.vinous.com

Ok admitted … I love NSG Aux Cras as a terroir – so biased. The Aux Cras is made from a plot with very old vines – 75 – 80 y.o. yielding a gorgeous juice in 2014. In the bouquet variations of sweet red and dark berries … cherries, raspberries and pomegranate – spiced with hints of game and an earthy but stony minerality. On the palate more expressive and floral than the Boudots with a lovely core of red fruit – so energetic and airy. Love the nerve and vibrancy of this wine … LOVE this wine.
