Classic ruby. A pretty red and dark berry fruit nose cut with ample animale, underbrush, leather and jerky notes as well as notably more earth influence that continues onto the more obviously classic Gevrey character as there is a robust and muscular quality to the borderline rustic flavors that culminate in a powerful and punchy finish of much better than average length. In 2007, the Charmes and Mazoyères line up the way their terroir profiles would have it as the Charmes is elegant and refined and the Maz is robust and borderline rustic. However in this particular case, there is just more underlying raw material that gives the Maz a slight edge in quality. Jan 2010, www.burghound.com

The 2007 Mazoyeres-Chambertin has a lucid, deep color. The nose is very fragrant, the dark berry fruit laced with hints of jasmine and Chinese tea, very well-defined and growing in stature in the glass. The palate is full in the mouth with soft, supple tannins. The acidity is nicely measured, although it still does not quite possess the tension of the 2011 when tasted alongside. But this is a generous, slightly spicey, generous Mazoyeres that should drink well for the next 8-10 years. Aug 2013, www.robertparker.com, Drink 2013-2022.

More marked by oak on the nose - a sweet toasty spice - but it doesn't cover the fresh fruit aromas. Charming and shyly inviting. Juicy in the middle, fresh and bright, with pretty good concentration for 2007 and lots of spice on the finish. Needs more time than the Charmes. Jan 2009, www.jancisrobinson.com, Drink: 2012-2018

Domaine Taupenot-Merme is based in Morey-St-Denis and has 13 hectares under vine in the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune. With a history stretching back to the mid 18th century, the estate really began to come into its own in 1998 when Romain Taupenot joined the domaine full time. The organically cultivated vines, together with low yields and careful sorting practices produce wines that are full of fruit, expressive bouquets, and gentle tannins.
