2012 Mazis Chambertin Faiveley

Tasted blind and scored at 97 points by Neal Martin, the 2012 Mazis Chambertin grand cru from Faiveley is “one of the standouts of the Cote de Nuits”.


With its huge score, this effort from Faiveley stands just a point behind some of the great Burgundies of 2012 such as Vogue’s Musigny and outranks even the likes of Rousseau’s Chambertin in Wine Advocate reviews. Given that it is clearly excellent, it remains very sharply priced for red Burgundy of this level.


That this wine performed so well will come as no surprise to those who have sampled Faiveley’s wines in recent years. This is a house that is making wines of exceptional quality, and in a vintage like 2012 and from a vineyard like Mazis, it is a genuine pick.

Here the nose is quite similar to that of the Latricières save for the fact that the sauvage character is even more pronounced. As is typically the case there is also more size, weight, richness and power if a bit less refinement and minerality to the large-scaled flavors that also brim with dry extract that does a fine job of buffering the hugely long finish. If you prefer a bit more elegance, buy the Latricières, and if you prefer robust power, buy the Mazis, though there's no harm in liking both! Tasted: Jan 15, 2014. Drink: 2030+

Faiveley is most often referred to as a negociant though should probably be viewed as a very large domaine that does a bit of negociant work on the side. Faiveley is one of the largest landowners in the Côte de Nuits, with 123 hectares, of which 12 are grand cru.

The style here has completely changed over the past decade. “Old-style” Faiveley wines, which are very-roughly defined as pre-2005, are classically austere, a little tough, and require a great deal of time in the cellar to show their best.

The “new” style is considerably more forward: the wines have plenty of sweet and seductive fruit, though with a satisfyingly firm structure underneath. “Textbook” is perhaps a bit too easy a description, but the style here will please both lovers of fruit and lovers of tradition. What is undeniable is that the domaine is currently firing on all cylinders.

Wines to look out for include the monopole of Clos des Cortons Faiveley, one of just two vineyards in Burgundy to include the name of the owner in its appellation, and the Chambertin Clos de Beze Les Ouvrees Rodin – a selection from their very best parcel of Clos de Beze that was traditionally reserved for the family’s cellar.
