The 2012 Mâcon Uchizy les Maranches has a crisp bouquet, a little more backward than the Lamartine and needing more coaxing from the glass, a bashful fella. The palate is well-balanced and has more tension and bite than the Lamartine with a vibrant green-apple and fresh lemon-zest finish that is direct, if not the most persistent you will find. Dominique said that the acidity levels were the same for both Mâcons, although my perception was that it feels higher here. ||Anyone who has tasted with Dominique Lafon in Meursault and Mâcon will know that his passion is shared equally between both. It’s probably a good job that the two regions are less than an hour’s drive from each other. Of course, just as things do not always go as smoothly as you would like in the Côte d’Or, neither do things run like clockwork in the Mâconnais. “We did not get hail here,” Dominique told me, “but there was bad flowering and mildew pressure. Fortunately, there was a nice summer in the end, though we ended up with half the crop. Alcoholic fermentation was normal but the malolactic was a bit slower that usual.” I also asked Dominique about the difference between the 2012 and prenatal 2013s. He told me that the latter started with a higher level of malic acid than 2012 but even so, it ended up being softer. I tasted the 2012s last year from barrel, but since they had recently been sulfured I decided to publish reviews once the wines had been bottled. eRobertParker.com.October, 2014
