The 2015 Les Hauts de Smith, from the estate's youngest vines, shows once again how delicious the best entry-level wines are in this vintage. Succulent, open-knit and seductive, the Hauts offers striking depth in a round, voluptuous style that reflects both the radiance of the year and elevated presence of Merlot. Dark red cherry, pomegranate, tobacco, mint and cinnamon add the closing shades of nuance. The blend of 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon results in an attractive wine, but one that doesn't capture the full personality of this great site. Apr 2016, www.Vinous.com

The 2015 Les Hauts de Smith is a blend of 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, picked up around October 8. It has a fragrant bouquet with touches of crushed violet petals littered over the blackberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin. Grippy in the mouth, cedar and graphite lending it an almost Pauillac-like flavor profile, this is a "serious" Pessac-Léognan that deserves 3-4 years in bottle. A fresh and very clean red with blueberry and blackberry. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins. 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet. Mar 2016, www.JamesSuckling.com

Polished, with dark currant and blackberry fruit inlaid with ample toast, but integrated, weaving through a tobacco-edged finish. Solid. Mar 2016, James Molesworth, www.WineSpectator.com

Exclusivity with Duclot (Moueix). Mainly Merlot (cf Le Petit Haut Lafitte). Very rich and sweet. Fine and polished. Dry finish. Quite unusually structured for a Merlot wine. Apr 2016, www.JancisRobinson.com, Drink: 2019-2028

Well-ripened, firm dark summer fruits, with a lick of flashy grilled meat – no need to wait too long to enjoy this; lots to enjoy. 55% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon. Apr 2016, Jane Anson, www.Decanter.com, Drink: 2019-2028

One of two second wines at Smith-Haut-Lafitte (something to do with a French distribution deal, apparently), Les Hauts is Merlot, as opposed to Cabernet-based. It’s a stylish, easy drinking, comparatively forward wine showing subtle toasty oak and fine tannins. Apr 2016, www.timatkin.com, Drink: 2019-2025
