This tasting consisted of each of the varietal components of Las Cases, followed by the final blend for Leoville-Las Cases. It is hard to believe, but the cuvee of Cabernet Sauvignon is so acidic, tough, hard, sinewy, and almost out of balance that it merits only an average rating, yet the final wine, which consists of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, is much better. It is a poignant example of how important blending can be, and how small percentages of other varietals can soften and alter a wine's personality. Although the Cabernet Sauvignon possesses fine color, it is extremely hard, tough, and unappealing. The 1979 Merlot is an elegant, fully mature, moderately ripe wine with an herb, tea, and coffee-scented nose, pleasant currant flavors, and a velvety finish. The Cabernet Franc exhibits aromatic complexity, with plenty of smoke, licorice, and curranty fruit. It is crisp and tart, but the initial attack tails off in the mouth. The Petit Verdot offers more fruit, spice, and body than the Cabernet Franc, as well as an excess of tannin.||The 1979 Leoville-Las Cases is one of the leaner examples of this wine, with some hard tannin remaining in the finish. Nevertheless, it reveals good fruit, a stylish, curranty, mineral, and vanillin-scented nose, medium body, some compactness, and a crisp, short finish. It is unlikely to improve, so drink it over the next 5-8 years. Wine Advocate.October, 1995

Château Léoville-Lascases is one of the leading estates in all Bordeaux and, along with Ch. Ducru-Beaucaillou , is the best estate in St Julien. It likes at the northern tip of the St Julien appellation, bordering the great vineyard of Château Latour . The blend is typical for St Julien: the wine is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (65%) with the rest of the blend made up of Merlot (19%), Cabernet Franc (13%) and Petit Verdot (3%).

Château Léoville-Lascases is the largest of the Léoville estates. Significantly, the majority of the vineyards lie on the Gironde side of the D2 – the road that stretches up the left bank from the city of Bordeaux to St Estèphe – and the “grand clos”, the heart of Léoville-Lascases lies in one 50 hectare block immediately south of the vines of Ch. Latour. Two further wines are made: Clos du Marquis and Le Petit Lion de Lascases. Clos du Marquis comes from specific vineyard plots that intermingle with those of Léoville-Poyferré and Léoville-Barton, whilst Le Petit Lion de Lascases, introduced in 2008, is more of a typical second wine.

Classed as a deuxième grand cru or second growth in the 1855 classification, Léoville-Lascases is often cited as a candidate for promotion to first growth status. In top vintages the property can produce some outstanding wines – Robert Parker rates the 1986 as a 100 point wine, and the 2009, 2005, 2000 and 1996 all score 98 or 98+. What is also remarkable is the consistency: Léoville-Lascases will always produce excellent wines, even in the most difficult vintages.
