Exotic, as it often can be, with super-ripe mulberry and black cherry fruit to the point of near-kirsch liqueur, with notes of licorice, truffle, and forest floor, this is a full-bodied, concentrated wine with a slight tannic bite to the finish. There is good freshness, depth, and power, and despite the flamboyant aromatics, this wine needs a good 3-5 years of cellaring and should keep for 15 or more years. Wine Advocate.February, 2009

Tasted blind at Southwold ’06 Bordeaux tasting. Since conception this has been a riveting Le Pin from Jacques Thienpont that vied with the ’05 for the upper hand. Here it has a bombastic, take no prisoners, almost exotic bouquet that is still showing a lot of puppy fat, though it calms down with aeration. Excellent delineation with aromas of macerated black cherries, fresh prune, fruitcake and cassis. The palate is rich and decadent, very supple tannins, well balanced, generous and voluptuous with a rounded silky texture towards the decadent, yet controlled finish. It is demonstrating less mineralite than previous bottles, but that will reappear once the sands of time have abraded this Le Pin down. Forget the price, just a gorgeous bottle of wine. Tasted January 2010. Neal Martin, eRobertParker.com

This shows coffee bean and blackberry aromas, with hints of cedar. Full-bodied, with sweet, ripe fruit and a chocolaty finish. Refined, this shows grace and beauty for the vintage. Best after 2012. James Suckling,Wine Spectator2009

Mid crimson with a hint of development at the rim. Some rather too obvious oak notes on the nose. Lots of ripe fruit and a bit of agreeable black cherry. But pretty tart and taut on the very end. Jancis Robinson, jancisrobinson.com

Le Pin, one of the three great, great names of Pomerol with Châteaux Pétrus and Lafleur , is one of the rarest, most expensive and finest red wines of Bordeaux. Le Pin produces just 600 or so cases per year from a tiny 1.6 hectare plot in Pomerol.

Owned by the Jacques Thienpont of the Pomerol dynasty who also own Vieux Château Certan , Le Pin was born in 1979 when Jacques bought the vineyards for a reputed million francs. With vineyard prices in Pomerol now estimated to be in the region of one to two million euros per hectare, this looks a bargain for what is one of Bordeaux’s most famous vineyards. Quality started to take off with the 1982 vintage: a case of this wine will set you back more than GBP 50,000 if you can find one – on release it would have been a couple of hundred pounds.

There are a few odd Cabernet Franc vines in the vineyard at Le Pin, though the wine is 100% Merlot and, along with Pétrus, Le Pin can be regarded as the pinnacle of what can be achieved with Merlot. Three vintages of Le Pin – 1982, 2009 and 2010 - are rated as 100 point wines by Robert Parker; other top vintages are 1990, 2001, 1989 and 2000.
