This wine has developed nicely in the bottle. The color is a deep ruby with purple nuances. The aggressive oakiness has melted away to reveal plenty of pain grille and sweet, rich black cherries, black currants, and a touch of prunes. Chocolatey and rich, this medium to full-bodied, super-concentrated Le Pin possesses more structure and tannin than is noticeable in many vintages. It is still a beautifully plump, hedonistic wine. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2010. Last tasted 11/97. Robert Parker, Bordeaux Book, 3rd Edition # B1

Tasted at Bipin Desai’s Le Pin vertical in Los Angeles. This is a very fine ’88 Pomerol. The nose is well defined, better than the last bottle I encountered with touches of cedar, mint and sous-bois, developing subtle gamey aromas in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with firm structure on the entry, a citrus edge lending it freshness and vitality with good focus. A charming Le Pin, it has an agreeable sous-bois character on the slightly dry finish. Good length. A Le Pin that must be imbibed over a meal rather than on its own, certainly one that reflects the personality of the vintage. 460 cases made Drink now-2016. Tasted November 2008. Classic Pomerol, with brown sugar, meat, berry and olives. Orange rind. Explosive nose. Full and very soft and silky. So long and rich, with great finesse. Dense and refined, yet wild and exotic.¿'88/'98 Bordeaux blind retrospective (2008). Drink now. 500 cases made. James Suckling,Wine Spectator2009

Le Pin, one of the three great, great names of Pomerol with Châteaux Pétrus and Lafleur , is one of the rarest, most expensive and finest red wines of Bordeaux. Le Pin produces just 600 or so cases per year from a tiny 1.6 hectare plot in Pomerol.

Owned by the Jacques Thienpont of the Pomerol dynasty who also own Vieux Château Certan , Le Pin was born in 1979 when Jacques bought the vineyards for a reputed million francs. With vineyard prices in Pomerol now estimated to be in the region of one to two million euros per hectare, this looks a bargain for what is one of Bordeaux’s most famous vineyards. Quality started to take off with the 1982 vintage: a case of this wine will set you back more than GBP 50,000 if you can find one – on release it would have been a couple of hundred pounds.

There are a few odd Cabernet Franc vines in the vineyard at Le Pin, though the wine is 100% Merlot and, along with Pétrus, Le Pin can be regarded as the pinnacle of what can be achieved with Merlot. Three vintages of Le Pin – 1982, 2009 and 2010 - are rated as 100 point wines by Robert Parker; other top vintages are 1990, 2001, 1989 and 2000.
