The 2015 Le Petit Haut Lafitte is a serious second wine built around a core of Cabernet Sauvignon. As such, it is a bit more representative of site than the Hauts de Smith. A blast of dark stone fruit, leather, scorched earth, gravel and savory herbs makes a strong first impression. All the signatures of the estate come through nicely in this powerful, brooding second wine from Smith Haut Lafitte. Far from an easygoing second wine, the 2015 has enough depth and structure to drink well for a number of years. The blend is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. Apr 2016, www.Vinous.com

The 2015 Le Petit Haut Lafitte is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. It has an intriguing bouquet, touches of shellfish, an estuarine element infiltrating the lifted black fruit, the new oak (20%) cunningly disguised. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. There is more breeding here than the Les Hauts de Smith, more precision and mineralité conveyed by the finish. A well-crafted Pessac-Léognan, give this a couple of years in bottle and you will have a lovely wine on your hands. Apr 2016, www.eRobertParker.com, Drink: 2018-2032

A firm and focused young red with full body, firm and silky textured tannins and a bright and fresh finish. Persistent and precise. Second wine of Smith Haut-Lafitte. Mar 2016, www.JamesSuckling.com

Very sleek, with cassia and plum notes framed by singed alder. Focused, medium-weight finish. Direct, but very well done. Mar 2016, James Molesworth, www.WineSpectator.com

Mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, 60% (cf their other second wine, Les Hauts de Smith). Very dark and lustrous. Very fine and polished. Lovely ripe fruit. Very healthy wine. Apr 2016, www.JancisRobinson.com, Drink: 2022-2035

Second wine introduced in 2008 – 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, vinified in its own cellar. Some excellent barrels could have gone in the first wine, but they were from young vines. Silky tannins, beautifully rich depth of fruit and less than 14%abv. Extraordinarily good: one of best second wines from this property, continuing its run of great form. More structured and ageworthy than Les Hauts de Smith (the château’s other second label), this has classic cassis and cedar wood notes, firmish, yet well integrated tannins and impressive focus and acidity. Apr 2016, www.timatkin.com, Drink: 2022-2030
