2008 Le Montrachet Marquis de Laguiche Joseph Drouhin

When considering which are the world’s greatest white wines, Drouhin’s incredibly rare Le Montrachet ‘Marquis de Laguiche’ merits serious consideration.

This incredible wine comes from vines that make up the largest parcel of the greatest white wine vineyard in the world, Le Montrachet. It still belongs to the Laguiche family, but has been cultivated by Drouhin on their behalf since 1947 and the wines they make are utterly exquisite.

No expense is spared in crafting this Grand Cru and the attention to detail is mind-blowing. Drouhin goes so far as to carefully control the weathering of the wood that goes into the barrels for a full three years to ensure that the influence is as perfectly elegant as possible. With only around 350 cases of this made in an average vintage it is incredibly rare and few cellars in the world are fortunate enough to own a case or two. This 2008 looks to be a superb example of this outstanding wine.

Highly perfumed notes of honeysuckle, acacia blossom, sandalwood and yellow orchard fruit aromas trimmed in just enough wood to notice give way to powerful, rich and dense full-bodied flavors that possess obvious muscle and simply huge length on the naturally sweet, complex and palate staining finish. This is a big and powerful yet elegant wine that is still very much on the way up. That said there is so much dry extract present that despite the long-term development potential this could actually be enjoyed now though I underscore that this should very much reward extended aging. Nervy concentrated greengage fruit sweetened with honey/honeysuckle. Pure tight mineral in the middle but there is no way you could describe this as lean. It has curves in all the right places and really terrific length. Still very young and primal, I suspect that somewhere around 2018+ it will be perfection. FINE+RARE
