Average critic rating : 92.0 points
A more refined and more elegant but very cool, even restrained nose of red pinot, blue berry and intense floral notes, particularly violets, introduces rich, pure and sleekly muscled full-bodied flavors built on a base of borderline strict minerality while culminating in an impeccably balanced, serious and gorgeously long finish. I really like the sense of underlying tension and if this can add more depth in time, my rating could be considered conservative. Allen Meadows, Burghound.com
Faiveley: The Importance
Faiveley’s reputation for quality Burgundy has always been impeccable. For Clive Coates, “a Faiveley bottling from the 1940s and 1950s, if you can find one, is one of the best guarantees of a fine old Burgundy - but they have improved even more since. This is classic, expert wine-making; currently second to none. Burgundy at its best.”
Jancis Robinson has joined critics such as Allen Meadows and Stephen Tanzer in giving top scores to Faiveley year in your out.
Faiveley: The Insight
At 120 hectares spanning all of Burgundy, Domaine Faiveley has a staggeringly impressive set of Grand Cru vineyards in the Côte de Nuits, including Chambertin Clos de Bèze, Latricières-Chambertin, Mazis-Chambertin, along with Clos de Vougeot, Echezeaux and Musigny. Perhaps even more notable are the Grands Crus produced in the Côte de Beaune, such as the Bâtard-Montrachet, the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, and the Corton-Charlemagne.
Other wines to look out for include the monopole of Clos des Cortons Faiveley Grand Cru Monopole, one of just two vineyards in Burgundy to include the name of the owner in its appellation, and the Chambertin Clos de Beze Les Ouvrees Rodin – a selection from their very best parcel of Clos de Beze that was traditionally reserved for the family’s cellar.
Faiveley: The Background
Treading the fine line between large family domaine and quality-obsessed négociant, the merchant side of the business today represents a mere 10% of production, with most of the grapes domaine-owned. The estate is currently run by Erwan Faiveley, who represents the seventh generation of Faiveleys to make wine in Nuits-Saint-Georges since the family established the domaine here in 1825. To support this model, in Allen Meadows’ words, “Faiveley has been highly acquisitive in the last few years” buying vineyards in both the Côte d'Or and Chablis. Other purchases include Domaine Annick Parent, Domaine Moot and a contract with Domaine Matrot-Wittersheim.
“The domaine has been pushing hard to raise the overall quality of their wines in the last several years- from what was already a very high level- and the 2009s that I tasted showed very well indeed,” according to John Gilman, while Allen Meadows reports them using more whole clusters and less new oak since 2012.
