The 2005 Latour (87% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot and Petit Verdot) is a spectacular effort from Château Latour. It has an inky plum/purple color and a gorgeous nose of graphite, crème de cassis, and floral notes with some forest floor in the background. It is full-bodied, super-concentrated, and for my taste, probably one of the two or three most intense, rich, and complex wines of the entire Médoc. The wine has great texture, purity and a finish of close to 40 or 45 seconds. The tannins are surprisingly sweet, even in this large-scaled, masculine wine. Drink it over the next 50+ years. The Château Latour 2005 has an outgoing and ebullient bouquet with blackberries, wild strawberry, minerals and wilted rose petals. It has great intensity and authority, a bouquet that is polished but not over-buffed. The palate is full-bodied with a silky smooth entry. The acidity is beautifully judged, layers of small red cherries, raspberry and cedar, with graphite revealed towards the long and persistent finish with startling architecture. Outstanding. A very complex nose of lavender, currants, spices, and hot stones. Full and dense on the palate, with a very tight structure. The tannins have a perfect polish to their density, and the finish is very intense, with wonderful fruit and truffle character. This turns almost decadent, with tremendous energy and a constantly changing profile. This is a very challenging wine to get to know, please leave this for at least ten years. Pull the cork in 2015. Dark ruby black in color. Brilliant, intense aromas of mineral, blackberry and currant, with hints of Indian spices and cigar box, lead to a full-bodied palate, with ultrafine tannins and a beautiful balance of blackberry, raspberry and mineral. Mid to dark ruby – a less impenetrable colour than I would have expected. Savoury, meaty nose. And then some unexpectedly polished tannins. This is far from the monster you might expect from the combination of property and vintage. Quite readable and fine. Quite a surprise. Marked acidity. Deep ruby-red. Reticent, brooding aromas of cassis, black plum, graphite and flowers. Then utterly explosive in the mouth, with wonderful sappy complexity of flavor and a thickness of texture that builds and builds toward the back; almost no sign of the new oak here. Offers a near-magical combination of power and refinement, but this extremely primary wine is still an infant. Finishes with extraordinary persistence that leaves the palate vibrating. One of the greatest young Bordeaux I've tasted in recent years, and more complete and classic than the outrageously lush 2003. For his part, Engerer feels that this wine combines the best traits of the 2003 and 2000 Latours. I made the mistake of retasting the 2007 after trying this, and the tannins of the younger wine came off as dry by comparison. May 2008, www.vinous.com

With a depth of color that still looks young, with coaxing you find, tobacco, cigar box, cedar chest, forest floor, smoke and caramel notes in the nose, but it takes effort to find everything at 10 years of age. The wine is powerful, tannic, full bodied, young and mouth filling. The wine offers concentration, intensity, length and refined textures, but if I gave the impression it’s ready to drink, it’s not. It’s more serious than fun to taste today, so give it time and air. From a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon , 12% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc , the wine reached 13.5% alcohol and was produced from just 44% of the harvest. Jun 2015, www.thewinecellarinsider.com

A great wine, the summation of a great vintage in Bordeaux. The core of richness, the dense, bone-dry tannins, the black currants, red berries and black plum skins are the elements, but it's the way they have been integrated that makes this such an impressive wine. Latour: The Importance

Château Latour is one of the finest wines in Bordeaux and one of the three Pauillac first growths, along with Mouton-Rothschild and Lafite Rothschild. The château is situated on the appellation’s southern edge, shouldering the border with St Julien and just a quickstep from the sloping banks of the Gironde.

 

Latour is often considered to be the most classic in style of all first growths. Described by Neal Martin as “a supernova around which others orbit”, Latour has a long history at the very top of the Bordeaux hierarchy, making it one of the region’s most desirable wines.

 

Latour: The Insight

Latour is situated on what could well be the best terroir on the left bank; built upon trademark Pauillac gravel and clay subsoil and perfectly positioned to reap the benefits of the Gironde breeze, Latour combines all the necessary elements for perfect wine. These excellent natural conditions are matched by rigorous production methods, with Antonio Galloni commenting “it is impossible to visit Latour and not be impressed by the total commitment to detail. Nothing goes unobserved”. This yields spectacular results: Latour produces wines of haunting precision, power and finesse – with few finer expressions of Cabernet Sauvignon (80% of the vineyards) to be found anywhere in the world. Other grape varietals grown are Merlot (18%), Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

 

There are three wines produced at Château Latour: the Grand Vin, Les Forts de Latour and Pauillac de Latour. Latour is often described as one of Bordeaux’s most consistent wines. The Grand Vin is a very serious prospect in any given year, but 1982, 2003, 2009 and 2010 are among its greatest ever vintages, with each awarded 100 points by Robert Parker. Les Forts de Latour comes largely from vines situated outside the heart of the estate and includes some of the younger vines of the flagship Château Latour itself. Occasionally, vats originally destined for the Grand Vin will be incorporated into Les Forts de Latour, and top vintages of this second wine are at the same level of quality as some past vintages of the Grand Vin itself: 2005, 2009 & 2010 spring to mind.

 

Latour: The Background

While the history of Latour’s emblematic château building dates back to at least the 14th century, its world-renowned vineyards were fully established in the 17th century, making them some of the oldest in Bordeaux. However despite this ancient heritage, Latour is not afraid to buck tradition. The house recently took the unprecedented decision to remove itself from the En Primeur system, meaning that it no longer releases wine still in barrel. This means that 2011 was the last wine to be released from barrel, with all future vintages to be held in Latour’s cellars until they are considered ready to drink. This move sets Latour aside from the other first-growths and has been hailed by some commentators as a shift in the future of Bordeaux.
