Always somewhat atypical (which I suspect will be the case with the more modern day 2003), the 1982 Latour has been the most opulent, flamboyant, and precocious of the northern Medocs, especially the St.-Juliens, Pauillacs, and St.-Estephes. It hasn’t changed much over the last 10-15 years, revealing sweet tannins as well as extraordinarily decadent, even extravagant levels of fruit, glycerin, and body. It is an amazing wine, and on several occasions, I have actually picked it as a right bank Pomerol because of the lushness and succulence of the cedary, blackberry, black currant fruit. This vintage has always tasted great, even in its youth, and revealed a precociousness that one does not associate with this Chateau. However, the 1982 is still evolving at a glacial pace. The concentration remains remarkable, and the wine is a full-bodied, exuberant, rich, classic Pauillac in its aromatic and flavor profiles. It’s just juiced up (similar to an athlete on steroids) and is all the better for it. This remarkable effort will last as long as the 1982 Mouton, but it has always been more approachable and decadently fruity. Drink it now, in 20 years, and in 50 years! Don’t miss it if you are a wine lover. Release price: ($350.00/case) Wine Advocate.June, 2009

Big and chewy. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, long currant, berry and cherry character. Underrated. Still more to come in this wine.--Bordeaux retrospective. Drink now. James Suckling,Wine Spectator 2001

Château Latour, situated at the southern edge of Pauillac on the border with St Julien, is one of the finest wines in Bordeaux. Of the three first growths in Pauillac, if Lafite is elegance and Mouton opulence, then Latour is patrician class. Situated on what is arguably the best terroir on the left bank, on archetypical Pauillac gravel, Latour produces wines of haunting precision, power and finesse. There are few finer expressions of Cabernet Sauvignon, or of Bordeaux.

Latour has been owned since 1993 by François Pinault, also owner of Domaine d’Eugenie in Vosne-Romanée and Château Grillet in Condrieu. All three estates are run by Frédéric Engerer who, since taking control at Latour in 1998 has overseen the creation of some truly stunning wines. The vineyards are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon (80%), Merlot (18%), Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

Three wines are made here: the grand vin – Château Latour, Les Forts de Latour and Pauillac de Latour. Les Forts de Latour comes largely from vines situated outside the heart of the estate, with some of the younger vines of Latour itself. Occasionally vats originally destined for the grand vin will be incorporated into Les Forts de Latour. Top vintages of Forts de Latour such as 2005, 2009 & 2010 are at the same level of quality as some past vintages of the grand vin itself.

Pauillac de Latour, the estates third wine, is made from vats that do not meet the selection criteria for Forts de Latour. It is an excellent example of benchmark Pauillac .

Uniquely for Bordeaux at this level, Ch. Latour does not release its wine en-primeur, choosing instead to release the wines as they are entering their drinking windows.
