2015 La Parde de Haut Bailly

2015 is a vintage in which the critics have heaped praise on the second wines, and La Parde de Haut-Bailly clearly demonstrates why.

Decanter called the first wine "The Graves wine of the vintage", but roughly a third of that harvest went into this wine. La Parde de Haut-Bailly has been commended for its seriousness and density by Antonio Galloni, who calls it "a voluptuous, dark wine..." that "...offers notable depth." Jancis Robinson compared it to the grand vin saying that it is "...very Haut-Bailly on the mid palate."

"Excellent second wine.", 92-93 points, James Suckling

"Although this is a second wine, it does have the structure of a wine more senior than that.", 92-94 points, Wine Enthusiast

"In 2015, La Parde is especially dense and inviting, which makes it a very serious second wine.", 89-92 points, Antonio Galloni

"Beautiful taut tannins.", 91 points, Decanter

"This is a very serious bottling, showing lots of smoky oak, firmish tannins and plenty of concentration.", 91 points, Tim Atkin

"This comes recommended.", 88-90 points, Neal Martin

For those who missed out on Haut-Bailly, this offers an opportunity to try the chateau's 2015 wine.

A voluptuous, dark wine, the 2015 La Parde de Haut-Bailly offers notable depth. Black cherry, plum, graphite, leather and dark spices are all fused together. In 2015, La Parde is especially dense and inviting, which makes it a very serious second wine. The blend is 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc. Apr 2016, www.Vinous.com

The 2015 La Parde de Haut-Bailly has quite a high-toned bouquet with blueberry and cassis. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannin, a hint of graphite with ample blackberry and blueberry. This is a structured La Parde de Haut-Bailly, grippy and slightly chalky with a precise finish. This comes recommended. Apr 2016, www.eRobertParker.com, Drink: 2019-2030

Very minerally and salty with lots of dried fruit, currant and floral aromas and flavors. Full body, silky tannins and a fresh finish. Excellent second wine. Mar 2016, JamesSuckling.com

55% of production and the Merlot was quite productive. 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc. Blueish purple. Very scented and purple-scented. Dry finish. Less charming than the Pape - tastes more like offcuts assembled. Rather awkward on the end. Though very Haut-Bailly on the mid palate. Apr 2016, www.JancisRobinson.com, Drink: 2024-2033

This second wine (30% of total yield) is 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc – the Cabernet Sauvignon was so good more was given to Haut-Bailly. Beautiful taut tannins. 13.6%abv. Apr 2016, Jane Anson, www.Decanter.com, Drink: 2021-2032

Around a third of the total crop went into the second wine at Haut-Bailly (with 20% sold off as Pessac-Léognan). This is a very serious bottling, showing lots of smoky oak, firmish tannins and plenty of concentration. Needs considerable time in bottle. Apr 2016, www.timatkin.com, Drink: 2022-2030

Barrel Sample. This wine has a fine, dense texture that is impressive with its smooth velvet character. The tannins are dark, solid and show a dry side to balance the beautiful juicy fruit. Although this is a second wine, it does have the structure of a wine more senior than that. Apr 2016, Roger Voss, www.wineenthusiast.com
