2015 La Gaffeliere

We are delighted to offer the 2015 La Gaffeliere at £226 per case (6*75cl) or £231 per case magnums (3*75cl) in bond. Described by Antonio Galloni as “an exceptional wine by any measure” and bearing a staggering potential score of 97 points, this is a real highlight that is not to be missed. Located next to Chateau Pavie in the heart of St Emilion, La Gaffeliere is one of the appellation’s oldest and most historic vineyards, with the family that owns the estate having roots in the Right Bank stretching as far back as the 1400s. This heritage shows in the glass: Robert Parker describes the Gaffeliere as a wine that “has gone from strength to strength” in recent years. This is is especially true of the 2015. Galloni describes the wine as “brilliant” and “exceptional”, awarding it the highest score he has ever given this wine: an incredible feat backed up by 92-94 points from Neal Martin, who called the 2015 “one of the best barrel samples that I have tasted” from the estate. With this in mind, it the Gaffeliere looks incredibly well priced at just £226 per six bottles in bond. Combine this value with impressive ageing potential - Martin considers that the Gaffeliere’s drinking window will stretch as far as 2040 - and this appears to be a no brainer buy. The 2015 La Gaffelière is a brilliant wine. Soaring, intense aromatics make a strong first impression. Precise and beautifully sculpted throughout, the 2015 bristles with energy. The flavors show good brightness, while the tannins are exceptionally polished. Freshly cut flowers, mint, espresso, sweet red plums and anise grace the palate in an utterly exquisite wine built on finesse, precision and nuance. The 2015 La Gaffelière is an exceptional wine by any measure. The 70% Merlot/30% Cabernet Franc works very well. Stéphane Derenoncourt and Simon Blanchard are the consulting winmakers. Tasted two times. Apr 2016, www.Vinous.com

The 2015 La Gaffeliere is a blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc. It offers attractive black cherries, boysenberry and mulberry fruit on the nose. Maybe it would benefit from a little more delineation, but the aromatics are focused and in sync with the oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin. The acidity is pitched nicely here lending ample freshness and poise. Energetic and vivacious, this is one of the best barrel samples that I have tasted from an estate that was revered during the 1960s. Time for a comeback? A textbook modern St.-Emilion, with a core bursting with ripe plum and raspberry fruit, and a long finish that pumps out licorice and bramble accents. The fruit is matched by the energy. Mar 2016, James Molesworth, www.WineSpectator.com

A Stéphane Derenoncourt wine. Meaty nose. Sweet and a tiny bit blowsy. A bit dry on the end. Pretty dramatic. If you seek impact, head for this hedonistic wine. I may have underscored it. Apr 2016, www.JancisRobinson.com, Drink: 2024-2036

The Cabernet Franc proportion of this wine has increased in recent years under consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt, and to good effect. This is a stylish, leafy, chalky wine with filigree tannins and a cool, refreshing elegance. Attractive stuff. Apr 2016, www.timatkin.com, Drink: 2022-2032

With a total of 22 hectares under vine, the estate lies adjacent to Ausone, Château Pavie, Château Belair and Château Magdelaine, producing highly finessed St Emilion. The 2006, 2009 and 2010 vintages were particularly successful.
