2002 Krug

The release of Krug’s 2002 vintage was one of the most eagerly anticipated fine wine events in years. Described by those lucky enough to taste it as utterly astounding, the demand for Krug far outstripped supply.

Awarded 98 points by Decanter magazine, it is a "magnificent" champagne well deserving of a place in any collection. It is drinking beautifully well currently but also has great potential to age.

Krug 2002 is quite simply a must-own champagne for any collector and, even this close to release, one that is already hard to find. In the future good quantities may be virtually non-existent and this may well be the last significant parcel we see so we advise all interested to act fast to own some of this glorious champagne.

A blend of 40% Pinot Noir, 39% Chardonnay, 21% Pinot Meunier from a warm, dry, generous, homogenous year, with 11 years' ageing on the lees. This was tasted immediately after Krug 2003 and was so much more discreet and savoury than the 2003 on the nose. It is chock-full of acidity and life, is really muscular and much more intellectual. For the moment the 2002 is less obviously fruity than the 2003 - clearly a champagne for long ageing - like many other 2002s - but much more backward than any I can think of immediately. There is nothing in excess; a great example of the Krug art of assemblage. Very solid and concentrated but not heavy at all. The finish is notably dry. This may be an intellectual wine but it's certainly not hard work! For Julie Cavil of the Krug blending team, this wine is 'a racehorse'. 'You were still riding regularly then', winemaker Eric Lebel reminds her with a smile. For them '2002 is about the generosity of Nature. We had to work hard to limit the yield a bit. There was lots of richness in the base wines; each sample had great generosity'. I look forward very much to following the development of this exceptional wine. The Krug 2002 vintage Champagne is a mix of bright Welsh gold and pale green lights and has a perfect flow of tiny bubbles. What aromatics – spring flowers from well-sited Pinot Meunier, and exoticism in the Chardonnay. The beating heart of the wine is powerful, poised and very complex Pinot Noir, still biding its time to majestically unfold. Magnificent. (Jan 2016) www.decanter.com Drink 2018-2050

Lemony, warm golden straw colour. Flecks of lime green. Spirals of fine bubbles. Very pure and delicate on the nose, melted butter, brioche, slight toasty note but subtle. Caramelised baked apple. Pastry. Touch of smoke. Amazing intensity, rich, but pure, restrained, understated. Freshly roasted pinenuts, touch of salinity. Vibrant, nervy minerality. Classy, elegant, everything in perfect harmony and working together. Beautifully weighted, mouth coating, soft, delicate. Hint of vanilla caramel on the finish. This is a special wine in its infancy, loaded with potential. Has absolutely everything in abundance. Fascinating. Stunning Champagne. One of the most exciting releases of the decade.
