A blend of Karuizawa malt and Kawasaki grain whiskies made in the 1970s, filled into glass rather than oak and forgotten about in a cold Hokkaido warehouse until 2014. On discovery, it was realised that this was something special, so it was reinvigorated (finished or ACE’d) in ex-Karuizawa sherry butt number 6432 and bottled in late 2015. Only 282 bottles produced and with over three decades of age on it, this is truly unique whisky that has been touched by many expert hands through its lifetime and encompasses the work of two cult distilleries.
The label is a beautiful extract from a print called “The Ghost of Taira no Tomomori Appears at Daimotsu Bay” by Yoshitoshi, from his “New Forms of 36 Ghosts” series.
Karuizawa is a legendary distillery from Miyota in Japan, opened in 1955, but mothballed in 2001. Norfolk-based Number One Drinks bought up the remaining whisky in 2011 and release the sporadically. These rare whiskies have a cult following and huge esteem amongst collectors.
Kawasaki is a now closed grain distillery, located in the industrial town of the same name, between Tokyo and Yokohama. The remaining whisky was rescued by Ichiro Akuto (behind Hanyu and Chichibu). Originally built by the Showa Brewery, it was taken over by Sanraku Ocean who also used to own Karuizawa.

A little over a year ago, we stumbled upon an incredible warehouse find up in the cold north of Japan: a blend of Karuizawa malt and Kawasaki grain from the late 70s, that had been slumbering in glass for over three decades. Thrilled to discover it wasn’t just a historic curiosity but great liquid from a time when most whisky produced in Japan wasn’t much to write home about, we revived it for the present-day as the seventh in our series of Japanese whiskies featuring prints from Yoshitoshi’s “new Forms of 36 ghosts”: a flash from Showa past in high definition.
