Johnnie Walker & Sons Private Collection 2017 Edition is the fourth in this highly-collectable series. Only 5,588 numbered bottles have been made and only 481 will be released in Europe, making it exceptionally rare. Entitled “Mastery of Oak”, it is an exploration into the influence that wood has on one of the world’s most respected and famous whisky brands.
Drawn from private reserves of irreplaceable stock including whisky from long-silent distilleries and experimental casks, Master blender Dr Jim Beveridge and his assistant Aimée Gibson have created a “sumptuous whisky with an abundance of oak-rich fruit notes”.
Carefully curated to “offer incredible taste experiences”, the whisky was assembled from three distinct and expert vattings. The first was predominantly single grain whisky aged in first fill ex-Bourbon casks, chosen to add creamy toffee and spice. The second – “the heart of the blend” – comes from refill American and European casks, used to gently mature the Highland and Speyside single malt components. The final vatting came from treasured experimental casks that Johnnie Walker & Sons call Matrix. This collection of 400 casks includes whiskies of varying alcohol strengths, casks of different toasts and origin, and even some salt-cured barrels that were considered too intense in their youth but have mellowed wonderfully now. The three vattings were re-casked into blending puncheons to meld together, before being bottled in a stunning decanter with an oak ring motif and wooden display case.
Although yet to be scored by the critics, the first release from this series received 90 points from Jim Murray, while the second received 95.5 points and was “possibly one less than perfect cask away from World Whisky of the Year.” Murray has yet to rate the third or this release, but according to Drinks International, at a tasting for whisky writers: “The feeling among the panel which included Charlie Maclean, Ian Buxton, Dave Broom and Drinks International editor, Christian Davis, was that 2017 was better than 2016 which also focused on the use of oak”.
Johnnie Walker releases “keep walking” out of the door, so if you’d like to secure yours, don’t delay…
