Scents of ripe peach and pink grapefruit, marrowy meat stock and brown spices could only come from Pinot Gris. In a reversal of their usual roles, this feels firmer and displays a brighter, juicier, more animated personality than the corresponding Steinporz Pinot Blanc, though the midpalate is still plenty rich as well as subtly oily. Smoky, stony and ashen notes along with peach kernel piquancy serve for counterpoint in a superbly-sustained, lusciously fruity as well as mouthwateringly carnal finish. “We got 4,000 kilos of grapes in 1994, our first year for a dedicated Smaragd, and we thought that was pretty meager. But we’re still trying to return to that level,” observed Irmgard Hirtzberger with a grin, adding, “It’s a bit of fun and games [eine Spielerei] we have with this grape.” Feb 2017, www.vinous.com, Drink: 2017-2024
From Spitz's former ski slope the 2015 Grauburgunder Smaragd Spitzer Pluris displays a lovely pure and elegant bouquet of ripe pip fruits intermixed with earthy aromas. Full-bodied, yet elegant and perfectly ripe, this is a Pinot Gris from 28-year-old vines that offers a stunning freshness and stimulating grip in the salty and stimulating finish. Still young, but with a very good aging potential. Jun 2016, www.robertparker.com, Drink: 2020-2030
